I am thinking of visiting to Ottawa for a day would be driving from Toronto. I am looking for suggestions of places to visit besides

* Canadian Museum of Civilization
* National Gallery of Canada
* Parliament Hill
* Royal Canadian Mint
* Rideau Canal

Are these places in Downtown ottawa & close to each other?

If someone can suggest few more places that are worth seeing around suburbs i will try to cover it.

I am also considering to take a downtown 1 or 2 hour bus tour if i find driving around downtown would be a hassle.

I believe tulip festival passed in May.

I checked the travel time from Toronto is around 4 hours.

Thank you very much.

Yes. Everything mentioned is close to each other, but you can't see it all in a day. Also try going on a thursday. Entry is free after 6 pm. As an Architect I liked the following :

1. Parliment hill
2. Canadian museum of civilization (they have a huge area for the kids to play)
3. Some Aircraft museum (This is away from the city)
4. National Galllery of Canada (The building design is waste and it is similar to museums existing in India. However they have a benz of Hitler as well as some run down Canadian jets). It is a new building and hence if you see it, it is better.

Also if you can combine Montreal trip with this also, it will be very nice as montreal is just 80 kms away.

Hope this helps.

TK
Thank you very much for suggestions.

did a bit more research into this how come those 3 day tour operators cover 4 cities. I guess it would be very brief look from outside & board the bus kind of.

"Day 1 Toronto - Kingston - Ottawa - Montreal
Depart Toronto in the early morning to Kingston, the city with 300-year history. Discover the oldest locomotive, Government buildings, pass by the only Royal Military College, Queen’s University and the residences of the first Prime Minster in Canada. Then proceed to Ottawa; brief stop at the residences of Governor General and Prime Minster, explore Canadian Museum of Civilizations, and also pass by Canadian Royal Mint, Parliament Hill and other Government buildings. After dinner, transfer to hotel. You can experience the night life of Montreal during your free leisure time at night.

I don't mind staying 1 night in ottawa if i can cover Montreal. May be drive to Montreal park at some place & take a downtown 1 or 2 hour bus tours & head back.

I would welcome suggestions from seniors & local desis.

I've been on one of those trips, and here's my experience:

* We started at 7:00 am from Scarborough. TO to Kingston is 2.5 hr drive.
* We got 1 hr in Kingston. Next we proceeded to Ottawa.
* At Ottawa we got about 1hr (again). All we could do is walk around the Parliament Building, take some pictures, get a quick bite and use the restrooms.
* We got to Montreal around 7:00 pm. Driving to the hotel, we drove through downtown. Night halt at Montreal.

Referring to the description you provided, read between the lines - pass by... - brief stop (5 to 10 minutes)

Unless if the hotel is in downtown Montreal, you cannot enjoy the night life, and at that hour, one is so tired, that you just want to snooooooze....

Nari:
Kingston is a crap place (unless you go for 1000 islands). Please avoid it.
Better places are Ottawa and Montreal. If you have a car, best is to do the tour by yourself. Before that get a map of the place and see on the web which will be interesting to you.

Thanks SS & TK for your suggestions.

Navigating the city map was a good idea. I was thinking to do a 1 or 2 hour Grey line bus tours for both the cities park the car somewhere.

Anyone has tried grayline bus tours.

For booking hotels i saw a website on tv.

Keep ideas/suggestions coming as it will help others too.

Not sure where you get that 80Km from, Montreal is about 200 km from Ottawa (little over 1.5 hrs drive)

To OP: You cannot cover all those places in one day if you are driving from TO same day. You have to atleast take the tour of Parliament if you are visiting it. Same for Mint, I think you have to book the tour before hand.

As for travel time, if you have family with you, it will be about 5 hrs drive from TO .
