Unusual for a bureaucrat, the kind of photographs of the victim diplomat, as appearing in the news channels, made us wonder whether she was IFS or looking for a Bollywood entry.

I don't think so, Sadism in public is not part of the US culture, there could be political agenda (perhaps the Attorney General is trying to establish his credibility) and wolves in India are trying to capitalize the situation to their best.
Where were all these folks with George Fernandos and APJ were harassed.

We consider our guests equivalent to God, Aththi Devo Bhava, especially the whites. But now we are withdrawing the special ID passes given to American embassy diplomats and consular staff. We have also removed the special barricade which were hindrance to traffic. Now the USA may understand.
The former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Satyabrata Pal has written an enlightening article as to why USA is wrong on the issue.

Why would US apologize? This issue is not related to official work done in the consulate by Devyani.
Indian media will never say completely what the charges are and what Devyani supposedly did.
If the issue is wage dispute, Devyani can show that the maid was paid at least minimum US wages electronically or by cheque but Indian media reports suggest that maid was paid by cash for the amount over Rs. 25-30,000.
The US Department of Justice press release is here that details the charges laid by UShttp://www.justice.gov/usao/nys/pressreleases/December13/KhobragadeArrestPR/Khobragade,%20Devyani%20Complaint.pdf" target="_blank">
