there are two sides of that coin.
there are enough abuses of the US immigration system, too.
think of the bonded labor slavery that the h-1B guys go through because of their desire to get green cards.
in theory that system sounds good, but in practice there is lot of abuse.
think of all the desi sweatshops that bring IT workers like "boat people" with the promise of a green card sponsorship.
highly immigrant communities like Indians, Chinese, Pakistanis and others will always find loopholes and workarounds of the system.
as a result, the country will not benefit and instead prospective immigrants will get exploited by these guys.
there is a lot of immigration abuse in Canada it is true, but it is at least not the wage slavery abuse like in the US.
that has reduced in recent times only because of the recession.

I like the direction that CIC is taking recently i.e. only job category based immigration.
so immigration is still open but only for specific job categories that are in demand.
and it is a lot faster. no waiting for 6+ years.
as long as that list of job codes reflects the reality of the job market, immigration should be pretty streamlined.

Very true. H1B and Green card hostage situation is like a plague, especially in the IT industry.

Back to Cdn immigration, the big question whether the job codes do really reflect the job market reality. I'd like to hope so.

meghal,
Health care cost if passed on to user/employer will increase cost and decrease benefit for employers to hire more in canada (just like US )

btw if everyone is paying taxes in the same kitty how will you distinguish who can /will/ pay and for what

the two tyer system will never happen for the users as it defies the whole program of collective healthcare

btw danny boy was just an example by me, but you must be aware of so many more canadians who fly abroad daily for medical care in latin america

They say so. CIC recently had a survey for around 2 months on their site about what is actually in demand.

- Given the lag between the time a person applies and the time he/she gets his/her visa, is that occupation still in demand? Especially in this kind of economic scenario.

- I did an eligibility test on CIC website. Engineers come in skill level "A" and can immigrate only if they have pre-arranged employment. So why do you still see posting on CDs asking about availability of engineering jobs in Canada? Am I missing something?

IMO, if we want immigration reforms, perhaps Conservatives may be able bring in the reforms that liberals/NDP might be afraid of bringing on due to losing the vote bank. So vote conservatives.:p

The whole NOC or Occupation Classification Stats is a fraud.
There are no. of people in Canada who are jobless from so called Occupation in Demand. First Service Canada needs to streamline those people.

We can try that too. However, I don't expect magic from them too. Because the system needs to import young bloods so that they can pay for healthy economic cycle of the country irrespective of the occupation of the imported blood.
