Now it does not say the effective date.

Sometime in July I had heard over 680AM that it is officially declared that this rule will be effective October 1, 2009. Since my drive was more than half hour, I was able to hear this twice during my drive (on the hour and half past) as headline news and that evening I had informed this to my wife and children. However, I have tried to search the net but do not find exact date of implementation. I also got an email from my friend yesterday informing me that a similar notice was circulated/posted in their company stating the date as Sept 1.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about when this bill is going to be effective. Sure there are a lot of rumours about Sep 1, 2009 being the start date. I too had heard about Oct 1, 2009 on 680AM.

The only authentic information on the web now is the link to the MTO website.

Having said that, it does not mean we have to start being careless once again :D I have started using my BT since last month and almost eliminated playing with the GPS

Do exactly the same you would have when there were no cell phones. I wonder how we all handled social/family emergencies 10-15 years ago. Do that exactly when you're driving. So, simply avoid the call and even if you want to attend the call or reply back, pull over.

There's NOTHING more important than the safety of others and yourself while on the road.

I support the complete ban (Cellphone and Blue-tooth).

Such inane arguments can be made for every law there is out there. And I am certain some dumb politicians will have raised it when deliberating.

I am glad this law will be in effect and I do hope it recedes the usage of cell phones while driving.

Law started from 1st Sept. 2009, Today at our office informed us. Do not use your hand device when operating Company vehicles.........

see below...... i did copy paste from Canada site, but doesn't show any pics i dont know why??:

Ontario's Bill 118, an amendment to the Highway Traffic Act is now in effect and bans drivers from using handheld devices with display screens while operating a vehicle on the road. Here is a summary of the new rules:
· Holding or using a wireless communication device (a cell phone) or a portable electronic entertainment device (iPod) while driving is prohibited.
· Commercial GPS units along with similar dashboard-mounted devices that provide gauges and displays relating to logistical or navigation uses are permitted.
· Using a cell phone or wireless communication device in hands-free mode, as long as you're not holding it during use, is permitted.
· Using any device while pulled-over or parked in a way that you are not disrupting traffic, is permitted.
· The systems used by Ambulances, Fire Departments, and Law Enforcement are exempt.

The ban is in effect as of September 1, 2009 and will carry a fine of $500. Demerit points will not be included but depending upon the violation, police will have the option to also use existing careless driving laws for additional penalties.

This bill has been passed for the safety and protection of all drivers on the road.

As I stated earlier, the law is not in effect as yet. A number of organizations have been sending out emails to their staff.

BTW, which Canada site are you referring to.

Also, this is a Provincial Law, the Govt. of Canada has nothing to do with it. The MTO website clearly states that the the effective date of Sep 1, 2009 is incorrect http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/distractions.shtml

I'm sure as and when this gets implemented you'll see it on the display signs on 401.

At the Provincial Govt. we haven't recd. any internal communication about it.
