I´m on H1 - did my landing in Canada last year, got the GC and SSN # & returned to USA.
Now I want to visit Canada for two days and meet couple of potential employers that I have spoken with, so I seek your advice on following;
1. If I drive into Canada - can I just show the GC to the officer at the booth and drive-on, or do I still need to get down and show credentials at the office.
2. If I fly into Canada - do I need to give my I-94 to the airline just as I would have if I was traveling out of USA to my country!
For returning to USA
3. Last time when I returned from Canada - the return was smooth, The US Immigration officer asked for my passport, I-797 and that was it. Has anything in the rules changed that should make me rethink or take any precautions! My H1 is valid till October
4. When I fly back from Canada - what does the US airline or Canada officials look for.
When I enter US airport (most likely at New Jersey) what should I expect - is it just like returning from any other country and get new I-94 or is it something different.

-- You show the PR card - I am not sure what credentials you are talking about.

-- Keep your I-94 with you - If you plan on returning to the US. You can enter the US using the same I-94.

-- The US port of entry will be in Canada. It is called the PFI (Pre Flight Inspection). The airline will look for your valid visa/I-94 and same at the immigration counter.
Thanks for quick and concise reply. Since it's a Friday, I hope I'm allowed another silly question/clarification - is PFI the only scrutiny for I-94 either side of the border, OR is it that PFI is the regular check on Canadian side AND on my return to New Jersey, I'll still need to go through the Immigration Channel!
I thought latter is the case but based on your initial reply, looks like PFI is the single scrutiny!

The PFI is the ONLY immigration check - once you pass that check, the flight lands at a regular domestic terminal in the USA thus eliminating the immigration check on arrival (in the US).

I am a canadian citizen on a J1 visa in USA. Now I want change my status to TN. My wife is not a canadian citizen but she is permanent resident of Canada. She is now in USA on J2 visa. Just wondering how to change her visa to TD. Can she change it with in USA or she has to go back to Canada and change her status. Also she is 8 months pregnant and can not travel.
Could anybody help me by giving some information on what should I do?

Once you change your status to TN, your wife can use the form I-539 to change her status to TD while in the US.
