Red Alert!!
We have had three break-ins in our condo building within the last two weeks. In EACH incident, the victims were Indians and the intruder stole only gold jewellery. Items used on a daily basis such as laptops, camcorders etc. were left alone even though they were in plain sight.
This happened at the Mississauga Place complex on Kaneff Cr.
Has anybody heard of recent or past cases with a similar M.O?

Sounds like the theives were also desi????
Why do people leave gold lying around at home?
I remember hearing about a sikh family when I was younger..whose house got broken into.. and they took all the electronic equipment..but the paath room with the guru granth sahib..there was tons of money sitting on it...the theives never touched it.

Thanks for the heads up.
It could be anyone because they are aware of the fact that Desi people invest a lot in Gold and even the lower income desi group will have good amount of stuff at home.
What precautionary measures can we take when staying in apartments to ensure saftey?
Few that come to my mind are:
1. Chain Lock
2. Keep all gold in Lockers
3. When going out on Vacation inform the management and leave a contact number in case they have to enter your apartment for maintanance etc.( not sure if this is safe or not)
Please share your ideas for benefit of all.
Few years ago when I was in Scarborugh, few condos were broken and all these condos belonged to South Asian (Sirlankan, Indian and Pakistanis). Most of condos broken were next to stairwell. Couple of months later, the thief was caught and was a Srilankan guy. He used to steal jewellery only.
Later, when I moved to Mississauga. In the first week of move, I read the news in Mississauga news that there were break-in in the few houses of South Asians at Derry and Mavis. This was on the same day. In one of houses, though broken, nothing was stolen. Police found out that the owner of the house has pasted a poster on the back of the door that "all our valuables are in bank safety deposit box at .....Bank" If you want something please contact our banker".
Couple of week later the thiefs were caught when they were trying to breakin in one of the house. The owners were in the house and they have to jump from the second floor window to escape and one of the guy broke his ankle. He was caught on the spot. All of them were south asians (indians and pakistanis young guys).
DesiTiger,
This has happened before near your area. I had even written a post about it but with the crude Charcha search option, I am not able to find it. It happened at an apartment at Paisley road 92 years ago). The house was broken into when the male of the house was at work (female was in India) and all the Jewels taken. The Indian girl at the opposite house saw through the peephole that it was some people of black origin who broke into the house but was not able to pinpoint faces. It also happens frequently where there are no camera's / security guards in the lobby. In cases where there is / are, then it is done by people within the condo./apt. building.
The police were not able to do anything about it, but commented that since oliver and other people were advertising that they were buying old unused jewellery, it was easy for the thieves to convert the gold into cash inno time.
Sanakaracharya (Ex-CD member) has also stated that one of the most important decisions that a desi can make (apart from finding a job) is to first find a bank locker to safeguard all the jewels.

Thanks TK.
I have heard rumours that there have been similar incidents in the past in this apartment complex but not sure of the details. Does anybody here at CD know?
BTW, the building is 3620 Kaneff Cr.
Thanks

I recently saw a home safe locker in one of the stores recently . Since jewelry can't be left in a bank locker all the time , it might be worthy to buy a safe for home and keep all valuables in it ----- or else keep the valuables in a hidden / unassuming place .
