We'll be more vigilant in monitoring crap like this. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I don't know what this article was about but I have been living in Thunder bay Area for the past few months and I HAVE EXPERIENCED racism for the first time in my life - For your information I worked more than 7 years in US and about an year in europe and I never experienced racism. You guys have to live in rural ontario/manitoba/sasketchwan to see the racism.

Some of the racial slurs I heard:
Black people are called 'Niggers'
Native Indians are called 'Conquered People'

and this is just a sample....

You guys will be shocked to see how some people think in these areas. Worse still, when I mentioned about racism to some people, they were asking me about casteism in India!!

I told those people that India implemented reservations which are way better than affirmative action in Canada more than 60 years back.

TD:

I am from Manitoba..born and raised. I have never experienced the type of bias until I moved to BC. I think you cannot generalize to a particular city/province. Its everywhere..and yet you can find examples of human kindness everywhere. You will see what you want to see.

Native Indians are actually called "first nations/Aboriginals". Calling them "indians" is incorrect.

Just to be clear, the article was not removed because of the allegation of racism. It was removed for sheer stupidity as evident from the list I've quoted above.

And I have never experienced racism in Canada, I lived and worked in the US and have experienced racism very frequently. That neither means that there is no racism is Canada, nor does it mean that the US is a very racist country. Its a matter of perspective.

Generally speaking, Canadians are a lot more tolerant. But yeah, I've never lived in a rural area so can't vouch for those.

Some questions then...

1) Approximately what percentage of people contitute these racists?
2) What do they do, do they call you slurs when they pass by you? Do they actually try to approach you to insult you? Or does it happen when you visit a certain area?
3) Last but not least, have you done anything about this?

1. When I first moved here the percentage of racists I thought was 0%. (That despite being warned by some of the local minorities that thunderbay area is a racist place). Now I feel there is atleast 5-10% people who are racist.

2. I had a first hand incident where I experienced racism in a public place when I went to watch a hockey match. I did go up the guy who used racial slur and told him he better be careful before using those words. (By the way, every one else was white in that indoor staduim except me!!). I also know of another incident in Sasketchwan where my friend was racially insulted in a bus.

3. I live in a town near thunder bay where I am the only Indian. I already spoke to cops about the hockey match incident and they said if something happens next time I can call them.

But the point I want to make is you can't change people's minds. Like people talking about Blacks and Natives using racial slurs.

This kind of loud racial discrimination is 100 times better than the silent type.

Some examples of the silent type are in govt offices, job opportunities, shopping, police, hospitals etc.
Where you can feel it, you can see it in the persons eye, you can feel it in the handshake, you can sense it in a room, you have noticed it in the fake smile. But there is nothing you can do about it.

Where you literally know you have been discriminated, but there is nothing you can do about it.
That is the kind which scares me and it is here in Canada, nobody should fool you otherwise. It will take time to rid this menace.

I don't think Time will ever completely rid this menace. Time has and will reduce racism significantly. But its a given that some people are going to be racists 500 years from now.

Yeah you can't when they do it behind your back. And why should you even try? I would only have a problem if they said it on my face OR if they took an action that affected me personally.

Besides, my focus would not be the racists, the focus would be people who're not. i.e. I'd try to focus on the 90 to 95%.

Absolutely, racism does exist in Canada. Living in the GTA however, (and have lived in the states), I can vouch for the fact that the degree is much much lower here than in the states. At least that's been my observation.
