Dear all

I am in the process of moving soon to Canada ( anticipate to be in Toronto on or about 21 August 2006) from the UK. I had a great job and great house in UK but the standard of life was very poor. London is too crowded fro my liking and I really like the open spaces and outdoor life that canada can offer

I think the is site is fantastic - loads of useful information. I will appreciare any guidance on the following areas

1) I am moving with my family which included two young children one aged 4 and my daughter is only two months old. Can someone please tell me what documentation is needed to register my son at school. At what age can he start school? How much does pricate nurseries/childcare cost ?

2) I already have a job lines up - is is better to buy or rent a property? How easy is it to get a mortgage. What are typical interest rates on mortgages?

3) What areas would someone recommed buying a house in. My job will be based in downtown Toronto. A lot of people move to Oakville from the UK. Is Oakville a good area to live in?

4) Is there anyone who has moved to canada from the Uk and can share their experiences?

Thanks and have a goo day

Hi Hiten,

Welcome to Canada in Advance.

I would like to give answers to some of the questions. For rest of the answers, we have learned members on the board who will make you feel home by their answers and advices.

Here the kids go to school nearest to there home once they turned 5 years of age. I believe the required documents for a kids admission to school would be birth certificate, PR card and proof of residence along with immunization record. Elementary education is free but you would have to pay for pre-nursury private school or day care if you send your kids there. Members with young kids would be in a position to shed more light on the day care costs etc.

Its good that you have the job offer in hand and would be employed as soon as you land here. Mortgage for you would not be any problem since you would have the job from the day 1 and it also depends on the amount of down payments you would be putting towards buying the house. You will find a load of information on house buying on this site under Real Estate and Mortgage Section as there are lots of postings for home buying and mortgages by new immigrants. You can also visit http://www.pramodchopra.com" rel="nofollow">LINK for more information about mortgage options and affordability.

Downtown Toronto, where you got your job may remind you of London as far as being crowded is concerned and you may not like to live there. Oakville or Mississauga may be a good option for living as these are relatively new and much better developments and you will enjoy the life of living in a suburb.

Hi Pramod

Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate your advise. I look forward to meeting all of you in person sometime in August as I will basically be starting my life all over again so will need to make new friends etc.

And by the way this is a great forum and I look forward to contributing to this as much as I can and share my experiences.

Best regards

Hiten
