To be precise, I should just say landing soon. Will be starting out of my home in New Jersey in a couple of hours. Plan to halt in some hotel(still need to make the reservation ) in upstate New york. Will be crossing through Niagara falls tomorrow afternoon. I plan to be here only for a couple of days before moving back to the US. Atleast those hotel reservations have been made. Final move should be around september. Working long hours for a MNC should finally pay off. At least I don't have to look for a job over there. My client has already agreed to my working from the branch office over in Toronto. yoohooo.. Now just need to get the landing completed without any hitches.
Good for you, Souvik.
Good luck with the landing!

Are you there?
The landing experience went pretty smoothly. We reached the border at around 5:00pm. First stop US customs just to make sure that they don't need any special notification since I was carrying a banker's cheque for 14K USD and another 17K of stock certificates. The customs officer said I didn't need to do anything special. While returning I should mention to the customs official that all that money was in "non-negotiable" form, i.e no one else could use it without resorting to forgery. The second thing I wanted to confirm was that I didn't have to submit my current I-94 which was valid till June end. After getting the confirmation I started for the Canadian side.
The Canadian customs official in the booth gave us a yellow slip with just one word 'Landing' and told us to go over to the immigration and customs office. We started with the immigration office where both ladies(officers) were cheerful and courteous. I was asked to write down the funds I was bringing and the canadian address on a piece of paper. They didn't even verify the cheque or the stock certificates. They took new passport snaps for all three of us as the new requirements are very stringent. After pasting the new photograph they gave us the extra photographs they had printed. After that we waited for about 10 minutes while they made all the entries after which they gave the passports back with the COPR and a welcome booklet and finally pointed us towards the customs office with a sweet "Welcome to Canada". Btw, I did tell them that this was a short trip for a week with the final move in September and both ladies agreed that it made a lot of sense.
After such a nice experience with the immigration we went to the customs dept. There was hardly any crowd and two customs officials started processing the paperwork immediately. They were very happy on seeing my detailed GTF list with all the model numbers and Serial numbers and prices written in canadian dollars. One of the things that they have to do if you give such a list in USD is to convert every entry in CAD approximately. We had also listed all our jewelry items and had printed them with tags that showed the reference number. It seems that it really helps them otherwise they had instances where they had to take snaps right over there and print two copies and stamp them. Just goes to show that a little bit of work upfront makes the process very pleasant for both the immigrant and the officials. I was impressed with the fact that one of the officers filled up the b4 or whatever that form was instead of just handing it over to me to fill it up. The last stage was going to the cashier over there in the customs who kept a copy of the GTF and handed me a receipt.
We were out of the building in less than 30 minutes. We paid the toll(still not sure what the toll was for.. the bridge maybe?) and went to the Ontario tourist info building which was after the toll booth and converted some of our US dollars. After that it was just a smooth ride to our Missisuaga hotel. Overall, it was one of those "good days".
