Any information from people who have actually gone through HRDC courses or through other organizations (where HRDC pays a part of the fees).
If you did did it prove helpful?
Looking for first hand experiences only.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

Thanks for all the details, Charlie.
I am sure this will be useful to me and others here.
So are you a Mech engineer?
did the Solidworks course prove helpful?
Which school did you do it from?

Yes, I am Mechanical engineer and have work experience as Application Engineer.
I did these programs from Maverick Solutions - Yonge.
I had applied for post graduate program at Humber College. By the end of program at Maverick my admission at Humber was confirmed and to have some savings before college starts I got into General Labour. I never tried to get employment in Solidworks or Autocad. At present I am earning for my PG at Humber starting Sept'05

Ok thanks again.
Just one more question....Can I go for any course?
If for example I want to go and complete a Data Warehousing Course which are usually short term .....few weeks, will HRDC consider it?
Since I was in software, I would be looking at software related courses.
I will be trying for certifications on the side though.

Hey there Mercury
Being on EI is no bar from attending a HRDC course, infact a person on EI is a priority client for them.
You can go to the following addresses for such courses-
COSTI
Centre for foreign trained professionals and tradespeople
700 Caledonia Road
Toronto ON M6B 3X7
Tel 416- 789-7925
or
COSTI
760 College Street
Toronto ON M6G 1C4
Tel 416-534-8437
Though what these offices offer are basically job search workshops of 4 week durations(which i dont think is your area of interest). If you do attend these programs, I gather you do need to tell the HRDC that you are "actively seeking", the people at COSTI or other place will help you with that.
Before you begin the program they would refer you to an employment counsellor for an Employment Action Plan (EAP), they get funded that way.
A shorter course of action for you, may be if you approach the office below for the EAP yourself
Vocational Pathways VPI
Keele & Finch Area Employment Assessment centre
1280 Finch Avenue West
Suite 706
Toronto ON M3J 3K6
tel 416 - 514-0354

You would need to take your PR card, SIN and resume with you, and tell them that you have associated experience in your country of origin and you want to take this course, based on your evaluation of the field.
The counselor will make an EAP for you. With that you can attend any HRDC course .
The counsellor usually would refer you to a job search workshop at the above offices of COSTI or a similar organization.
However if you tell the counselor that you have been in the country for quite some time and could take along some material on courses and job adverts where those qualifications are asked for, the councillor can recommend you for those too, provided the cost is not too high. You should be able to manage that.
The EAP goes into the system as your plan of action and even when you, if you chose to, apply for OSAP for a course, it adds weight to your application.
And yes, attending such courses does help, i have a few acquaintances who did benefit from it. Hope it does for you too pal.
All the best
Regards
