Hi

I understand that for taking up an odd/survival job in Canada, one doesn't need a release letter from the past employer.
However, if someone is planning to take up a formal job (preferably in his/her own area, if available), does the prospective employer insist for a full & formal release letter from the employer in India?
Can I start working without furnishing the release letter from my previous employer who is based in India and any other problems that I might face?

Thanx

sumjo --

I have never heard of a Canadian employer asking for a "release letter", that too from an employer based 5000 miles away in India.
I agree with Vadasambar that they couldn't care less.

Why a release letter in the first place - you were not a slave of your employer.
You were an employee and have every right to quit when you choose, so no question of the employer releasing you.

However, make sure you do get some good documentation to prove yur work experience and the nature of job that you did.

You can word is differently. But the fact is one needs a kind of Reference. Call it by any name. Though it's better to have the reference letter from your former boss/ employer, even from colleage will be of great help.

I myself have given ref of my dubai boss in couple of places. Honestly it's a kind of slavery.....

OK, but my case is a bit different. My present employer has a very wide presence in Canada, including TO.
So really don't know what to do............I hope my would-be employer doesn't ring up the TO office for reference, etc.... :(

OK, now you are playing a different tune :p

The first thing to do is make sure whether your present employer and the one you wish to join are competitors or not.
This is because there may be a "non-compete" clause in your contract that prevents you from joining a competitor within 1 year or 2 years of quiting this company.

The second thing is, it will be to your advantage if you quit your company on very good terms and if some of your colleagues and supervisors are ready to give you a reference.

This is because when you apply for other jobs in Toronto, if you have references in Toronto, it will be to your advantage.

So, yes, if to maintain good relations with your present employer, you need to get a formal release letter (or whatever) then you should do so.

It never does any harm to leave a company on nice terms.
