I saw the ICT mentioned by him. Hence.....

If he is on a ICT permit, he must be considered skilled so he probably will qualify to apply for PR under PNP (Program) if his employer is willing to sponsor him for a Permanent Resident Visa. If his employer is 'not' willing to sponsor him, because he wants him back in his native country, then he can wait until he has 2 good years full time work under his belt and then apply all by himself under Canadian experience class. Skilled worker is also an option but his employer has to play along there too.

To get a work permit for his spouse, he just applies for one. If s/he is skilled, s/he would be entitled to an open work permit based on the work permit. S/he just has to apply to change his/her status, S/he should include a copy of their marriage certificate and the work permit and of course what ever they ask for, plus the FEES too.

All of this is for some one who wants to stay, But he says that he will be back after THREE years. You can only lead a horse to a trough..... and Do you think things are better there in India now?

Wow! This has opened a new world of information for me! Your post had such an impact on my thinking that, now I don’t rule out long term stay as an option (if we like the place and she gets a job! ) Thanks FH for letting me know this and TK for leading to this response…
Also the tips about tax saving, winter clothing and initial onboarding are also equally useful. I also found that company will sponsor flight ticket/relocation cost for family only if they accompany me for during the initial relocation. Given the fact that I could save up to $700 if wife is with me, I don’t have to think much to bring her along with me during the initial travel itself. Only challenge I can see is to roam around looking for apartments in the winter. As per wiki, temp can go –ve in December and I have not seen anything below 15 degree yet! Hope I will survive that...

Both are correct, but point 2 will be realized only after 5-6 months of initial heavy expenses. First few months there will be nothing left from salary to save plus over and above you will do additional expenses such as buying Car, 2 months rent at out set, buying basic furniture and kitchenware etc.
When your are counting your chickens, account in 6 months of gestation period.

I like your attitude and curiosity to learn and know cultures and life styles for which you are ready to uproot and travel. You will enjoy , for sure. Stay away from basements, will be my suggestion #1 plus get your international driving permit.

Thanks for this valuable piece of info, San-Hugo.
So I am thinking to travel alone initially, and stay as paying guest or similar set up for initial 2-3 months. Is there the concept of furnished PGs where single executives can stay for short duration?
And study the market during this period, and find best available option with respect to apartment, car etc, finish other formalities like SSN, driving license, then bring wife after 3 months. This way I can save some amount during this period as well, which I can use later ...
Do you see any flaws/risks in this plan?

You can get a room in most houses ..usually desi houses for $ 400 - $ 500 a month. Everything will be shared though like Bathroom , Kitchen , Laundry etc. they will have washing machine and dryer for that.

Don't expect a 5 star room ..but its going to be OK ..keep your room clean and you should be fine. sharing a toilet , kitchen etc might be an issue as some people have filthy habits.

The room will have a bed in it , a closet , a desk , a chair etc. Usually they will have Free Wi-Fi internet connection , so you can use your laptop. but NO phone.

You can cook yourself or ask someone to cook for you for 100 - 200 bucks more..per month.

Yeah its a good option to come alone for the first 3 months or so , but make sure its not more than that..it will put pressure on your marriage.

If you have already lived in NY , then there is no issue for you here..NY is even more chaotic and difficult to rent than Toronto.

In case your wife is in India for first 3 months send as much money as possible to her during that time... You can get a tax deduction for money sent abroad to sustain your family ..... I experienced this when I landed in 06 and I think the rules must be the same..

You should be eligible to apply for PR after one year or so ..if you are intersted.

I do see a flaw in the plan. Your wife must travel along.
Remember , Ek se bhale do! you alone will not be able to setup your house, you need a wife for many decision. At times it happens that you are in office and the delivery guys need to come to your house.

Aren't you getting first few days (or weeks ) in hotel as part of package ? Thats the basic relocation pack.
I will not suggest you to take any paying guest/temp accommodation. I think some hotels or motels will provide you accommodation for a month which will be equivalent to one month rent or may be little more.

To know best suitable place for you, please study the transit system of the area and try to find place next to a bus/go train/subway station. Due to lack of license for first month or may be more , you will not able able to buy any vehicle.

In order to contribute to RRSP, you need an RRSP limit. To get an RRSP limit you need file taxes. So the op can only contribute to RRSP in year 2. If the op is planning on arriving in December, the earliest he can contribute is in 2016.

The op has also indicated that he wishes to return back in a few years, what happens to the RRSP. Is he going to withdraw that?

For the op's benefit, Registered Retirement Saving Plan (RRSP) is comparable to Provident Fund (PF).
