I'm assuming that you have a HD digital video camcorder.
Panasonic video files are stored in a .M2T format. They can be easily converted to any other video format, provided you have the right software. Pinnacle is one software tool used to convert such files. A trial/lite version of Pinnacle may have come with your camcorder (atleast it came with mine).
I've spent hours researching the same thing that you just spent 2 hrs on.
It's not difficult to convert M2T files to another video file format, but certainly time consuming. Once you learn how to use the software, you realize the things you can do, i.e. video merging, editing etc.
Google for converting M2T files to another format.
I do have another software, that you can borrow. You may have to spend hours to do the conversion, and your timelines seem very tight.
Check your PM
Edit: Sent you a email, CD won't allow me to send more than 1 PM in a day.. something new

For converting from cassette to digital format, you need a video capture cable. It will atke RCA or S-video as an input and output to USB.
So you'll have to play your cassette in the player, output connect to video capture device and input to USB in your computer. At the same time you need software to capture the video that is playing and save it as a mp4 or any other digital format. Don't expect the quality to be that great.
This is the one that I've used successfully, and it came with the software -> http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=612720&Sku=O38-1022
Google for video capture cable and you'll find tons
