Once a mathematician borrowed Rs.4000/- from a rich man. After a few days, he borrowed Rs.2000/- from the same man. Many days passed, the mathematician did not return the money to the rich man. The rich man went to the mathematician and asked to return the money. But to his great surprise, the mathematician replied that he had already paid the debt.

"See here, friend" said the mathematician " the sum of 4000 and 2000 is equal to zero, so I do not have any balance to pay".

The rich man took the matter to the court. When the judge came to know this, he was astonished. He asked the mathematician to prove that sum of 4000 and 2000 is zero, but not 6000.

The Clever mathematician agreed.

He said " let a = 4000 , b = 2000 and c = 6000"
a + b = c
Multiply both sides by a + b
(a + b) (a + b) = c (a + b)
a*a + ab + ba + b*b = ca + cb
a*a + ab - ca = cb - b*b - ba
a( a + b -c) = -b(b + a - c)
so a = -b
so a + b = 0
:( :( :( :( :(
Hence by putting the values of "a" and "b" as 4000 and 2000 respectively, their sum is zero, so the mathematician saw no need to pay any money to the rich man. The above calculation has no doubt surprised you as it did the judge.

:( :( :( :(
how??????????????????????

Here, the mathematician is contradicting himself.

In the first statement he says 4000 + 2000 = 0
and in trying to prove that statement, he starts with the assumption that
4000 + 2000 = 6000

If his first statement is true, how can he make an assumption that
4000 + 2000 = 6000 (which as per his own argument is a wrong assumption). In this case, he has already admitted his guilt and should pay back the money.

In a purely mathematical solution, he should only start with the statement a + b = c, without assuming any specific numerical values to a, b & c.

If a + b = c
a + b = 0 is one of the many possible answers, in which case c = 0.

Mathematician has not proved anything except that he is a (trying to be smart) cheat.

Here the mathematician fools the world by dividing both sides with zero (a+b-c is zero), which is illegal in maths. Thus all the calculations which looks very beutiful are illegal so got unrealistic results.

Still very good!!

In math, there r so many juggleries that r unimaginable. There is a six numeric magical number, which u multiply with any number between 1-6 gives the same numerals in same order but with different starting numeral.

Astonished!!!!

The number is 142857.

Try it yourself!!!

Ho Ho Ho !!!
A real life mathematican (my Maths teacher in 9th grade) actually fooled us with this contradiction ! It took us 1 week to figue this out. And I happened to inform him abt this.. after 9 years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when we again met in IISc Bangalore :D
