Driving in the US on Ontario G2 license

Is it legal to drive in the US on an Ontario G2 license (this is for a short trip from Toronto to New Jersey and back), also anything to keep in mind in relation to auto insurance.

if you drive safe(no accidents, tickets etc) you should be okay, check out some links,best is to hire a rental car

Yes. There will be no effect on your insurance for driving. Your insurance policy should be applicable in Canada and US
