A Mayan Conference Answers Apocalypto's Call for a New Beginning
2012: Gateway to Your Future, a conference about the Sacred Mayan Calendar responds to public fascination with a civilization ahead of its time.
Topping Hollywood box office charts at $15 million after its debut weekend, Mel Gibson's action film Apocalypto attracted curious audiences and passionate opinions from all sides of the long-standing debate about the demise of the ancient Mayan civilization. Perhaps the most scathing criticism, coming from parents of school-age children to professors to film reviewers from The Hollywood Reporter and the New York Times, was the movie's extreme focus on violence and its complete exclusion of the Maya's brilliant advances in art, science, mathematics and astronomy.
But if Apocalypto is indeed trying to depict the end of a civilization, it completely misses the one thing that does explain it, according to the Maya themselves--the Sacred Mayan Calendar. December 21, 2012 was identified by the Maya as the time when this transformation will become most obvious. It was an auspicious date for them because their astrologers predicted that at that moment the sun would move into alignment with the center of the Milky Way. Modern scientists, not the Mayas, offer theories that are the basis for the film's thesis that the earth's climate and magnetic poles may be changing.
Answering that call is the first and only conference in Canada called 2012: Gateway to Your Future hosted by Wisdom-Forum, a non-profit organization. The purpose of this GROUNDBREAKING conference is to explore a radically different, more optimistic interpretation of the Mayan prophecy - as referring to the end of the world as we have known it. In addition to predicting a physical destruction of the material world, the Mayan prophecy might refer to death and rebirth and a mass inner transformation of humanity.
A host of researchers, scientists and wisdom-keepers will gather to give latest information and discoveries on the meaning of 2012. World renowned scientist and scholar Gregg Braden will share his latest research on four new discoveries which connect science and spirituality which will forever change how we view ourselves. Colin Andrews actually coined the term 'crop circles' and has just returned from UK after filming a documentary for National Geographic and BBC World has the latest information on the conscious crop circles and their message regarding 2012. A Future Visioning process led by Ti Caine, a hypnotherapist and futurist will take the audience to meet their future self.
"The Mayan Calendar, viewed from the meticulous and comprehensive analysis of researchers like John Major Jenkins, has a great deal to say for our crisis-weary world," said Sheena Singh, founder of Wisdom-Forum.
John Major Jenkins goes even further: he explains that the Calendar, used by the Maya for 2500 years, is not merely a calendar, but a system of structuring time in such a way that may help us understand the rise and fall of entire civilizations. "The Mayan Calendar," he says, "is a structure and system that allows us to unify science and spirituality in a way that has not been explored previously. The prospect of unifying the two could have profound consequences for human society. And given the considerable attention that the Mayan culture is now attracting, I feel it is important that people are given access to reliable information about this calendar."
And it seems the public is ready to embrace the positive, forward-looking lessons the ancient Maya have embedded in their legacy. "Response to the Conference has been tremendous; people are writing in from as far away as Australia and India," said Nikki Hayes, director of marketing of Wisdom-Forum. "We're seeing an explosion of interest in a topic that we frankly thought would take a lot longer to permeate mainstream audiences. People are even bringing their older children to the conference, some of whom are coming home crying because they're learning in school that according to the Maya, the world will end in 2012. That's of course not the case, and only reflects the dangerous misinterpretation and misinformation about other cultures that persists in our own society and educational systems."
For an audience that is worldwide, the conference is being live streamed for October 22 and 23, 2011. Another vital part of this conference will be the free live streamed meditation experiment led by Gregg Braden and Howard Martin of the Global Coherence Initiative, a science-based initiative in San Francisco that measures how the magnetic fields generated by the earth are affected by human emotions. The conference is hoping to gather 144,000 meditators who will then observe world events during the following days to see whether mass positive intentions do affect change.
With all this interest in a culture that survived for over a thousand years in a hostile tropical environment, and contemporary imagination running wild over the 2012 prophecies, modern society may indeed have something to learn from the Maya and their Sacred Calendar.
