Thane tribal Christians allege 'prosecution'

Thane, Jan 9 (IANS) A Catholic NGO Wednesday accused some Hindu groups of allegedly terrorising tribal Christians in a Thane sub-district in Maharashtra by not allowing them to practice their religion.

In a memorandum to Home Minister R.R. Patil, the Catholic Secular Forum (CSF) has said these incidents happened during the past fortnight in Palghar.

"Tribal Christians have complained that they have been forcibly stopped from drawing water from village wells and collecting firewood for cooking in Manor and surrounding areas," CSF general secretary Joseph Dias told IANS.

Dias said that when they approached police, the Christian tribals' complaints were not registered.

In October, there were similar incidents in Malvan sub-district of Sindhudurg district, and the community had demanded protection.
