Nine jailed for attacking policemen in Gurgaon

Gurgaon, Dec 22 (IANS) Nine people were jailed for attacking policemen and municpal officials during a demolition drive near an Indian Air Force (IAF) ammunition depot here, police said Saturday.

Policemen and Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) officials had to run for their lives when a mob pelted stones from rooftops in Sheetla Colony Friday afternoon to demolish an illegal under-construction boundary wall.

The incident left nearly a dozen injured, which include four policemen and equal number of municipal officials.

The police has registered a case of attempt to murder, arson and some other sections of IPC in sector five police station.

Nine people were arrested including seven from Sheetla Colony and two from Gurgaon village, police said. Fifteen people were also detained after the Friday incident.

Those arrested include, Sanjeev, Rajesh Kumar, Satender Kumar, Rakesh, Chunmun and Jai Shankar. They were Saturday produced before a court here and were sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

"Our investigations are on. Some more arrests would be made soon," Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Surender Pal Singh said.

Ward councillor, Gaje Singh Kablana demanded that no innocent person should be targeted.

The MCG officials had come with police to bring down illegal constructions within 900 metres of the IAF ammunition depot in accordance with the orders of Punjab and Haryana High Court and the deputy commissioner but were confronted by a mob of people.

The incident also widened the rift between the MCG authorities and area councillors, with the latter accusing the authorities of high-handedness.
