Sharp seeks tie-ups with US firms

Osaka, Oct 26 (IANS) Japanese consumer electronics maker Sharp Corporation is seeking business tie-ups with several US companies over liquid crystal displays (LCD) for smartphones and tablet computers, a media report said Friday.

The move comes as uncertainty over the cash-strapped company's accord with Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. in LCD production continues to increase, reported Xinhua.

The Taiwanese firm seeks to revise the terms of their capital tie-up agreement after Sharp's share price plunged in response to ballooning losses, according to the daily Asahi Shimbun.

The report said the troubled Japanese maker is, therefore, urged to seek more business tie-ups with US companies, such as top PC chipmaker Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft or Apple Inc.

The report added the Osaka-based maker, which makes screens for Apple's iPad and iPhone, would aim to accelerate negotiations on possible capital alliance with other companies than Hon Hai, citing the company's latest reconstructing plan, which was submitted to financial institutions in September.
