Now you can track a moving train

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) If you are concerned about the safety of your family or friend travelling in a train, a GPS-based train tracking system launched by Indian Railways will make it possible at the click of a mouse.

The Real Time Information System of the Indian system will help monitor train schedules.

In order to overcome limitations of the existing Train Running Information System, the Lucknow-based Research Design and Standards Organization of the railways and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, have jointly developed a GPS-based train tracking system.

'The system is working successfully in a number of trains. We will add around 10 new trains per week,' director IIT, Kanpur S.K. Dhande told IANS.

'The train tracking system uses both GPS technology and satellites service,' he said.

Train information dissemination by dialing 139 in the existing Train Information System is dependent on manual collection and feeding of train running information, said officials.

The railways has decided to implement technology to track all trains, passenger as well as freight trains.

Amazing questions :-) , I have strrong urrrge to answer them :-)

?? Who makes it dirty?
- People, those who had no where else to go in moving train ! there is only one spot!

?? Do people really read the instructions on how to use it?
- Oh man ! when nature calls and you waited outside in queue for some fatso to come out, who does the reading?, its time to strip and let it GO !! few minutes later you read and start to think 'clearly' abt other important things.

?? Only government can't make difference.
- she can indeed! , providing continuous flow of water , paper or whatever. Only if you pull-up the sox of those contractors and deny them next time the milky contract.

?? Here in Canada too, go to a park in summer with lots of people of desi origin.. ...flavor !
- No Sire ! I went to beaches here in canada and many a times not so many desi around and still saw public toilet dirty ! ghaaties are everywhere, showing them the right way is admin job.

Flushshsh!!!!

So, it is easier to blame railway administration. But what about people? Who makes it dirty? Do people really read the instructions on how to use it? Do they stop using it while the train is at the station? Only government can't make difference. Here in Canada too, go to a park in summer with lots of people of desi origin and we can easily get flavor of our indian toilets.

People should change first. I think on the payroll, indian railway will have more people per toilet than needed, but simply the rate at which people spoil toilets their efforts are not effective.

Let us coin word "Toilet Engineering" and help Indian Railway build better toliets!

I was in the First class as well as the cattle class of some trains recently.
Nothing has changed. The toilets still drop the excreta on to the tracks as before.
But one thing that I saw was that none of the toilets were messed up with excreta and it was generally clean. But then I never saw any one celaning the toilets when the train used to stop at major stations and the toilets stinked with some of them not flushing water as it is supposed to be.
New addition is plug points (two for one coach in cattle class and one per cubicle in first class) for charging your laptop / cell etc..
Peace

Fair comments but fixing toilets and installing tracking systems (together with IIT) are two different projects run by separate entities, so cannot be mixed up. Of course clearly one deptt (amenities related) is less active and not so effective. Toilet and hygiene on trains is primarily contract and proper audit control failure. The contractor who are hired for cleaning the trains and even the catering contractors are all on for saving money. There is no honest controlling over them once contract is awarded. They are not debarred for poor service and are awarded contracts again and again and thus the problem stays.

Agreed, the hygiene habits of people are questionable but at times if you do not find water or paper in there , no matter how much you want to clean it for your own habit, you will feel helpless standing there ! .

I am sure GPS system is more to do with IIT's push than IRTC 's motivation.

I am not sure of the current, but in the past all the toilets dropped the feces onto the tracks - which itself is totally unacceptable. I pray they have been modified now.

It is easier to adopt new technology and implement it than to change peoples attitude towards public toilets. Even in the more developed and educated society in NA, we often find clogged toilets in public parks and beaches. If all the users started using the public toilets as they use the one at home - this issue will get solved (9/10).

GPS train tracking is indeed beneficial to the travellers and their relatives for real time data. I think it is a good application and should be standard even in buses and trains in NA.

However, the security aspect should also be looked into - since the more facilities they provide, the easier it is for terrorists to plan/monitor their next targets.

Fix the people first, who cram themselves in before letting everyone out from that 2 feet wide train door. Hence, the utter chaos. Fix the toilets - I agree.

Don't know why they always fail to take care of the fundamentals first and then move up. GPS, huh? I wonder how many people will use it. Having said so, I think it's a good option. However, they have to fix the basic issues with Indian Railways first before embarking onto something this expansive.
