Windies cricket chief lauds women's team for reaching final

St. John's (Antigua), Feb 15 (IANS/CMC) West Indies Cricket Board president Julian Hunte has congratulated the West Indies women's team for reaching their first ever World Cup final.

Wednesday, they produced a Herculean effort in their last Super Six, second-round game to beat Australia Women by eight runs and book their place in Sunday's championship game.

A WICB statement quotes hunt as saying the players have improved because of the work done by previous teams.

"The players have played with unwavering passion and drive and they have achieved like no other West Indies Women's Team has achieved in the past," Hunte remarked.

"But this team stands on the shoulders of the achievements and the work done by previous teams and players and they have taken it to the next level."

The West Indies now face Australia again in Sunday's final and are determined to emulate their male counterparts who won the ICC T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka last October.

"Following on from the men's team winning the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka last year the Women have now entered into the final and it is another indicator of the progressive path upon which West Indies Cricket has been placed," the WICB boss added.
