Shimla, Feb 6 (IANS) For the first time in over a century, the "Queen of Hills", as Shimla was fondly called by the British, Wednesday recorded the highest precipitation on a single day in this month, an official said here. In the last 24 hours, Shimla recorded 76 mm of precipitation, including 7cm of snow, till 8.30 a.m. This is the highest ever precipitation in the town in the month of February, India Meteorological Department (IMD) director Manmohan Singh told IANS. He said the last time the highest single-day precipitation in Shimla was 63.5 mm, recorded on Feb 2, 1908. Shimla and its nearby tourist spots woke up Wednesday to a white sheet of snow, giving the resort and its neighbouring areas a picturesque look. But the residents of this town shivered as icy winds brought down the minimum temperature to a fraction above the freezing point at 0.1 degree Celsius. This was the season's second significant snowfall that froze the town.
