especially Oracle Financials.
What about other applications areas like HR?
Does one need a good background in accounting and north American practices?

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

Very good questiton;

First, to tell you why I choose to reply your query, I am myself an Oracle Apps consultant and havinig finance accounting background.

Yes it is recommended and desired a previous hands on " business functional " or "trade functional" knwledge and experience before taking up or working with ERPs.

the above functioanl areas can be anywhere from Finance, Marketing, Purchasing, Inventory and stores management, HR, Manufaturing and distribution and cost control, risk amanagement etc to name.

Now the relevance of all these are there in ERPs with each of the specific modules one works with.

The functional exeperience helps one in several ways namely;

1. Better understanding the business process
2. helps in understanding process flow ( functioanlity put into Oracle apps flow)
3. Most important of all - you will have a fairly good idea of legal / statutary obligations and rules associated with all these in real time.
like;
Statutary Audits and compliance
FDA regulations in US (where related and requried - industry specific)
GAAP for finance modules ( Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
HR laws and best practices;

Hope this answers your question.
Let me know if this off the way.

Thanks

No offense, but please try this site - Absoutely free as well.
Only downside is It does not cover Cost and management accounting.
But this is very useful basic info and practical too.

I will give more info again in next post.

I am adding another site here, this is more illustrated and useful to understand what goes on in terms of accounting and its usage etc.

http://www.principlesofaccounting.com/chapters.htm

For being a successful Oracle Financials Consultant , are both technical as well as functional skills required - or is it better to be either Technical / Functional .............?
Which are the best cities wrt the Ora Fin market ?
How does Ora Fin v/s SAP in Canada ?

Manasvi.

Mercury - If u r fresh in Accounting - try reading Accounting Principles by TS Grewal -- will give u a basic idea abt the handling of things . CMA is entirely different from Financial Accounting . I feel the link posted above is good.

I am in oracle Financials area but I am an accountant too. If you have a good technical understanding, I would suggest try CRM or even HR is good. Make sure you have some knowledge of business processes in the area you choose i.e either CRM or HR.
