The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century
by Thomas Friedman

Has anyone read this book? I am told that the book gives a real picture of the future (20-25 years) North American economy, which is not really good. It seems the author concludes that both India and China along with developing countries would usurp most of the jobs in North America.

I will look at the chapters this weekend to get the book.

Its a good book. The book makes no such claim that China and India will usurp all the jobs however it claims that everyone should look at finding their specialized niche and constantly adapt with changing technology to avoid being made redundant. He says that the flow of commoditized jobs to developing nations is unavoidable hence NA should adapt itself to the situation rather than fighting it.

Friedman is a great fan of India and his book is liberal in its anecdotes about India. Excellently researched and extremely well written. As Rogers and Ebert would say two thumbs up!!!

I read a review of the book in the newspaper and the review was positive too. I'm probably going to have a read

Friedmans articles irritates both the left and the right. That kind of balance is always welcome. e.g: he supports the iraq war/israel etc...but also recently said that camp gitmo should be dismantled.

A few quotes from the above articles for those who dont like long reads

''Friedman, like many of his colleagues on the Left, simply believe that we can talk and behave ourselves out of this war, if we can just prove to terrorists and the rest of the world that we are nice and peaceful people.

Thank God these appeasers aren't running the War on Terror. And God help us if they ever do.

Posted by David Limbaugh at June 2, 2005 07:01 PM"

"Friedman made his reputation and received two of his Pulitzers for his reporting on the Middle East. Given the U.S. policy of underwriting Israeli ethnic cleansing over a half century and, adding to this the consistently strong NYT support of that policy, Friedman has necessarily followed an Israel-apologetic course. For Friedman, Israel only retaliates whereas the Palestinians engage in terror, which is the causal force in the conflict—not Israel’s “redeeming the land” and ethnic cleansing, nor its occupation policies in general, which have been in gross violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention (which he never discusses). Just a few months after Arafat called for mutual recognition and negotiations with Israel in 1984, Friedman wrote, “By refusing to recognize Israel and negotiate with it directly, the Arabs have only strengthened Israel fanatics…”

As Noam Chomsky has noted, the NYT refused to publish a word about Arafat’s offer, but there can be no question that Friedman knew the facts (even if the NYT suppressed this information for its readers) and that he ignored them in favor of the oft-repeated lie of the time (and Times), that Israel couldn’t find a negotiating partner (see Chomsky’s Necessary Illusions and Pirates and Emperors for more on this case and on Friedman’s bias).
-By Edward S. Herman"

It does not need a book or an expert to tell us this fact. We all know it already that most manufacturing and It jobs have moved to India and China.

But the white man is smart he will make sure something develops here. also the population of India is going to increase like crazy so in the end the Per capita income will not increase as much as for a developed country.

Also the white man is is searching the next frontier space . i am sure he will find a habitable planet soon . and that will give a boost to the developed countries again.
