Hi,
Does anybody have any good/bad experiences with gifting a pc to someone back home via online sites like indiatimes.com or HP India? Any recommendations regarding this? I'm thinking of doing the same but am a bit vary and would like to know if anybody here has had any success doing something similar.

It is better that U send them the moneey and ask them to purchase th ecomputer from some they know...
In India, a lots of things and support is required after the purchase, which big companies are unable to give. Also the telephone advice and calling an engineer at site for repairs, set-up and other matters is much costlier.
So, even big companies sells throug local vendors.
Buying from a person who speaks your language and whom u know is always better...
