Guess it was yesterday, or maybe the day before. I was watching the Hindi news on ATN-Zee channel.
It seems the Maharshtra State Govt. has declared that it will provide monetary compensation of Rs 1 Lac to the family of any mill worker who commits suicide because of losing his job to a mill closure!!

So, now is it something like this?:

Mill worker(MW): I have lost my job!
State Govt(SG): How?
MW: The mill I worked in has closed down.
SG: What do you want?
MW: Help.
SG: What help?
MW: I want a job.
SG: Sorry, we don't have that. But, tell you what? We can help you with some money.
MW: Really? That would be nice.
SG: Yeah...and it would not even be counted as loan. It would be all yours to keep.
MW: Wow! How much can you give me?
SG: How about Rs 1 Lac?
MW: That would be great. How do I get the money?
SG: (taking out a gun, giving it to MW) Here. You have to kill yourself first.
MW: WTF??

DTC: WTF!??!

Its kinda confusing and frustrating for me...

On one hand, i think that suicides should never be compensated. U dont want people killing themselves just so that their loved ones are more stable.

I do believe that suicide is a crime.
On the other hand, someone has to take the responsibility. In the context of these mill-workers, The person who kills himself is surely responsible. But Is he the only one responsible ? There may be other factors, where some external policies, lack of help, guidance and counselling, alternative opportunties might have avoided this. On humanitarian grounds, On a moral level, i do find the govt responsible, So them paying for what they could have done but didnt do looks ok.

So, where is the balance?
I dont have the answer. Can there ever be a right answer for this?
Its kinda grey area...from my perspective.

ATN is available on Roger's and Cogeco, and also on Bell ExpressVu. All you have to is start subscribing to it. It costs me something like C$15 a month extra. I don't know, but I guess Roger's and ExpressVu have all different channels available, like ATN ZEE, ATN B4U, ATN Sony etc. Can someone confirm this? Who is the cable service provider(s) in the GTA? On Cogeco, I get only one channel and the programming is mixed, meaning that the one channel shows some programs of each. Sucks sometimes.

Actually it is a very sad scenario.

Maybe the said declaration was made only to increase the vote bank. The millworkers are really facing such plight that it becomes ironical to say that Bombay is the commercial capital of India.

The areas of Parel and Elphinstone where the majority of mills were, were once considered as the lower class areas and people in their cars rarely gave a second glance. But today with the conversion of those same mills into BIG Bazars and discos like Fire and Ice, it is the favorite haunt of the Page 3 people.

The number of suicides by mill workers does not even get a decent 2 liner in the newspapers....it is pathetic

it will be another day when and if they would ever get that One Lac

Yeah.... that money should ease their sufferings.... a bit....

The problem in india is the economic disparity between the rich and the poor.
