Just curious to know why basement appartments are rented at lower prices. What are the disadvantages.. Is it snow a big problem for basement ? Is a basement appartment are underground?

You will see less vantilation and natural lights in basement. They are not as good as highrise apartment buildings. But there are lots of people living in basement.

Snow is not at all a problem. The heating system will take care of it.

I'm still in India but I can also say about basement apaartments that they require lot more maintenence, there may be washing machines, lift motors and heating sytems installed adjecent to your living area. these things makes a lots of humming sounds (some times noice also). and the humidity levels may also reach exterms in the basements. basements may not have proper entrance, unwated people may be bothering you and BASEMENTS are not always secure to keep your valuables, passports and certificates etc.

My suggestion is that rent a farther away or small apartment then a basement.

Koikee loog kya kahangay factor is also important.

Good guess!!! Logically it seems right, but largely it is not true. Most of the people make basement as their home theater or bar or recreational room. They are well finished, water proofed.

You are right that there is a laundry room, boiler and heating system in basement and it might make sound (and it does!) but it is not as loud as you think about it. Second it usually have separate entrance.

Some of the basement are ideed on the ground level, so they will not look like basements at all. Most are like few steps below, where you will get windows in all rooms for some ventilation.

Saying that there are many horible basements where you hardly find any windows. I lived myself upon coming here for two months in such a basement!!

Bottomline is - you have to check and see before you live in any basement apartment.

HEY...
Its a proven fact that whenever someone migrates to a new country he/she feels uncomfortable interating with people....coz its a new world altogether...but according to me basement apartments help a lot in this ..as everybody knows that basement apartments are only rented by our desi people(no offence) u can always ask ur landlord abt his previous experiances when he/she landed. i personally think it helps a lot
but the most important advantage of basement apartment is u feel at home .....as ur landlord is desi u can always update urself on indian matters ................yea basemnt has all the machines..but i think above mentioned positive points about basement apartments overcome all the negative points like noise n stuff
