Our son is currently studying in grade XII and we plan to send him to Canada for further education. We recently went to a fair of Canadian education institutes and present over there were universities & university colleges. Can some one tell me the difference between the two.
Kind regards
Hello !
Just share some info... There are Universities granting degrees, there are colleges granting Diplomas ( resemble to Polytechnics of India ), and some provinces have grantied Degree granting powers to some of the collges.
Hope this satisfies your querry.. Please feet free to ask if any further info needed..
Good luck.
Thanks Namaskar for the explaination.
How is "The University College of The Cariboo" (UCC) rated in Canada. Is there anybody on the forum who is an alumni (ex or present) of the university? Do any of you know any body who has been to UCC?
The reason I ask these questions is because, in the presentation they made, I found their program very interesting. They have a cumpolsory Co-op program where each year the student does about 4 months of Co-op. That is to say by the time the student passes out she / he would have already have close to two years of work experience.
Kind regards
I think you will find a lot of universities in Canada offer co-op programs for business and engineering students. Although most of these programs are not for international students. What is the status of your child in Canada? Also, I think you might want to look at University of Windsor. They have a 100% placement rate for co-op this year in business faculty and about 80 % placement rate in co-op for Engg. Also, being the southernmost city in Canada Windsor has a mild temp as compared to the rest of Canada.
Bigger the city, better the chances your child will have of networking and consequently finding employment in Canada. So do give some weightage to Universities in bigger towns.
I hope this gives you some more choice and information that you can use. I have never heard of UCC so I am unable to help on that account.

Thanks Neha.
Yes, I am aware that in Canada international students are not allowed to work and some special permissions need to be obtained and are extremely difficult to get. I also understand that as a pilot project some universities have been given permission to place international students in Co-Op programs. Was informed of this by two universities - 1) Arcadia & 2) UCC.
During a recent education fair in Dubai there were quite a few Canadian universities and amongst them was the Windsor university. We did visit their stall but to be honest weren't very impressed by their presentation. I understand that the reality might be different and that they might have a very good business college. Are you by any chance an alumni of Windsor or associated to the university in any way? We would certainly appreciate some feed back from fellow desis who can give us their honest opinions & guide us to the ground realities rather than the presentations made by paid agents or university representatives. The 1st will proclaim the university which pays the highest fees as the best and the 2nd category is duty bound to promote the university he / she works for.
Neha, you did say that Windsor had a near 100% placement rate for Co-OP. Any idea if that included the International students?
Kind regards
I am a current student at the Univ of Windsor and therefore knew about their placement statistics. Yes, this includes intl students. 100 per cent placement for business students who had the required grades to get admitted to the Co-Op program after first year. If your son gets the required grades that would be something in the B average range he would be able to get into Co-Op and find internships.
I worked as the Univ representative in the summer of this year but now I am just studying here so am not obliged or duty bound to promote it. I just happen to know a lot about this university as I am a current student.
You should look at all aspects of a University and if truth be told- education standards for all 70 univ in Canada which offer Undergrad courses does not differ.
What you need to consider is their location (bigger city) , placement history (for intl students) and atmosphere (spec. with regard to intl students).
For sciences U of Toronto is an all time fav in Ontario but I have no idea if they have a Co-Op program.
Regards,
Neha
