I think, one of the good way to make Canada a better place for future immigrants is to increase the representation of people of Indian (or South Asian) origin at Federal or Provincial level.
Currently the number of MPs or MPPs of Indian origin in Federal or Provincial government is quite low (I am not taking into account the representatives from Sikh community). As a result, the concerns/problems of our community are not conveyed properly to the people in power. For the "fat cats" in Ottawa or Queens Park, we are just some faceless immigrants, same as other people from other Third World countries or ex-Communist block countries.
I know getting foothold in politics is not that easy, but it is worth a try. But you should be really sincere in your efforts to help people in your community, rather than just making money.
At same time, I have realized that we Indians are indifferent or least interested in the Canadian politician scenario. What happens in Ottawa or in Queens Park hardly interests us, even though it affects our daily life. We are more interested in Indian politics (And I do not blame people for that). But if we want to make life of ours and our fellow Indian better, we need to take active interest in politics.
Hi Meghal,
I agree to an extent that the subject is of relevance, but at the same time you have tried to paint a gloomy picture of the reality.
I am surprised why are you not including our Political representatives from the Sikh Community. Are they not from Indian origin ? How can you say that our concerns are not conveyed properly through them ? This remark at first look appears to be in bad spirit.
Have you ever met Mr Gurbaksh Malhi (4 time MP) in person ? Or Have you had the chance of interacting with Mr Raminder Gill, former MPP ? The current rookies Mr Navdeep Bains and Dr Ruby Dhalla are simply great performers and they infact have the capability to raise the voice in an effective way. Dr Ruby Dhalla was herself parachuted into Brampton Springdale constituency due to her strong political links and commitment ever since last 18 years.
I am sorry to say that your post was malafide. Tomorrow you may come up with another childish idea of having a Gujarati MP/MPP, a Tamil Councellor, a Bengali Mayor, and so on. But is it practical ?
Dear, please stop posting threads of such nature and instead raise your valid concerns and talk to your area MPs/MPPs irrespective of their Indian origin.
I am sure any of the elected representative at Federal and provincial level would be most happy to assist you and help you out.

Enjoy ur life !
I agree Gloria,
I had exactly the same reaction on reading Meghal's post. The success of our sikh community in business and politics is something to feel great about. Here is another great axample of a community which despite being in visible minority could merge well in the Canadian mainstream.
Ontario's transportation minister is also a desi.

Hi meghal,
YOU sounds exactly the way I suspect many majority community people think & feel envy about Sikhs. It seems to one of your older in family must have participate in 84 riots. We still try to make amends by having electoral tie up with bjp & give leaders in congress(make it won even in Punjab assembly elections). But still gets hatred from u chaps. Just remember one thing. U & me are just brownies in North America. So better see how to get best political interest served together.
