BEING CANADIAN
On a web-board, while discussing about the recent killing of a Filipino teenager by some "Indo Canadians" in Vancouver, the definition of "Canadian" came into picture. Somebody defined a "Canadian" as
"What is Canadian? What is Indo-Canadian, >Italo-Canadian......etc?
People see different things, people and label >them differently.
I would think that 'Canadian' would be someone >raised here from a very early age who has >inculcated values, ways, mores, idiosyncrasies of the 'Canadian' psyche, an English-Canadian accent/pronunciation and the realization that snow is a fact of life."
To most of the extent, he is right. I am listing out the reasons why I am still not a Canadian.
(1) Snow may be a fact of life, but in no way it can be fun. There is no way I can sing "Let it snow Let it snow". Snow means more hassle in driving, more trouble cleaning the car, icy roads, dirty boots and inconvenience.
(2) Winter cannot be fun too. There is no way I can enjoy skiing or skating. It is too much of discomfort to go out in double digit negative temperatures
(3) Going to some place warm in winter does not involving lying on a beach in Florida or Cancun. It means spending some time with your relatives back in India.
(4) Ice Hockey is something you play on ice. Hockey is something you play with sticks and balls on turf.
(5) Go Leafs Go is something you can utter in Botany classes. Also, the plural of Leaf is Leaves and not Leafs.
(6) Football is something you play with your Foot(or Feet). Soccer is the US term. There is no way you can label a game played with hands as Football. Also, ball means "round" and not "oblong"
(7) Baseball and Basketball are games that Americans play. When you see such thing on TV, that means you change the channel or shut the TV off.
(8) The tables and rankings appearing in the sports section of newspapers make no sense to me.
(9) Curling ???!!! What is that
(10) Sports = Cricket & Cricket = Sports. Watching sports on TV means watching Cricket match or Football (soccer) during Worldcup
(11) Ordering beer in an Indian restaurant involves ordering Kingfisher or Haywards, and not Molson or Labatt (:P)
(12) I cannot utter the expression "eh" while at the end of any sentence.
Good one meghal.
I still feel funny responding to "Hi, how are you", by saying "Not bad!" The first time I heard that I was shocked and indeed thought of asking the person if everything was ok and if there is somehting that I could do, but I checked myself. Later a friend of mine clarified that these are standard responses. To the same greeting I find this one funny too "I am good". It tickles me everytime I hear it!! Feel like asking back, " Nice you have been a good boy today else ..."
