About the musicians:

JACQUES PHENIX, SITAR
Jacques Phénix has been performing on the sitar since 1978. He began in
India, at Rishikesh. Inspired by the music of Nikhil Banerjee, the Calcutta
maestro who passed away in 1986, he studied with Rahul Sariputra, John
Campana, and Mark Lewis in Toronto, and finally with Amit Roy in Calcutta,
himself a disciple of Nikhil Banerjee and son of the celebrated sitar maker,
Heren Roy.

Specialising in the classical style of Calcutta, he has played for the
Indo-Canada Association, in many festivals in the Indian community, at the
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, at the Bibliothèque Nationale, in Burlington,
India, Indonesia, Mexico, and in Thailand, where he lived for several years.

SHAWN MATIVETSKY, TABLA
Shawn Mativetsky is a freelance percussionist, recognized as a contemporary
tabla specialist. He performs in a variety of settings, including Indian
classical music, contemporary music, world music fusions, and as a member of
the groups Ensemble Mahapooram, Matter of Time, the Mont-Royal Quintet, and
Surtal. Shawn also accompanies dance and theatre, including contemporary
dance, kathakali, and flamenco, and teaches tabla and percussion in
Montreal. He is currently teaching at McGill University, where he is
Percussion Area Coordinator.

Respectful of Indian classical music's rich traditions, Shawn Mativetsky is
a ganda-band disciple of Pandit Sharda Sahai of the Benares tabla gharana.
He has also studied tabla with Bob Becker (disciple of Pandit Sharda Sahai).
In addition to his tabla studies, he has studied Western classical
percussion with Pierre Béluse, D'Arcy Philip Gray, Andrei Malashenko, and
Robert Slapcoff, and the percussion of kathakali with Bruno Paquet. Shawn
holds a Master's degree in music from McGill University and has received
grants from the Canada Council for the Arts.
