Job Fairs are not for finding the job on the spot. But attending them is a better strategy than sending resume through mail/email whether in response to online job posting (majority of advertised jobs don't exist) or blind mass mailing.

Any activity which brings you in personal/physical contact with the perspective employers or facilitators increases your chances of finding job (Networking and Referral).

I highly recommend people looking for jobs to attend events, tradeshows, networking meetings, or any place you are likely to meet your target audience. And then follow up with the organizations and people you meet at these events.

An organization hire "person" not "qualifications listed on a piece of paper."

Dear AnilkG,

I also believed this what you have mentioned here for job fair. Truly speaking, I have attended 4 to 5 job fairs and my experience is really shocking, not me only but most of attendee who were there, believed like me.

Just think, CAD 3 entrance tickets when I visited National Job Fair, thousand of people were in queue for entry and I also waited 1 hrs in queue for entry. When I entered, I showed there was no place for standing. Hardly 30 to 35 stoles were there. I don’t know exact figure but approx stoles were like:

1 for Police training
1 for Fire bridged training
8 for Universities counselling their courses
4 for Computer course training
5 for misc. offering courses like photography, Advertising and Models etc,
15 for Job Agencies out of this there were only 4 or 5 big agencies

They just distributed list of available jobs (which already listed on their website) and business cards. Jobs outside Ontario also included in their job lists. Just collecting pamphlets for job list and handover resume, people have to queue up in front of stoles.

There is no meaning to attend this type of job fair, if you have sufficient time and money and you want to enjoy and gossip with other unemployed people and satisfy yourself that I am not only unemployed and looking of job but there are many people like me, then you have to go there and attend this type of fair.

I am suggesting people here; please paste your experience after visiting next National Job Fair or any other job fairs.

I have also visited ACCESS’s job fair, the same worst experience and also attended 2 or 3 more but I forgot the name of institution but all like it.

I was also there at the job fair Kap has mentioned.. I was new in Canada then and was really looking to get a good start and heard from some ppl that they have a lot of Techie jobs in the fare.

My experience was same. .There r no jobs.. most of them are for courses which universities/colleges come there to sell... Then you have few companies like McD/UPS who just tell you to give your resume.. and some companies (insurance) are there to offer commission based jobs.

Some even tell you to submit resumes on their websites as that will ensure that it goes to the right department.

JobFares are trully a waste of time..

But you may find a few desis behind the stalls who are there just to give you a glimpse of hope.. that someday you may also be on the other side of the line.

May be you should ask those desis \"How they got behind the table\"? Only hope is not going to take you anywhere except in la la land.

\"Waste of time\" is relative on value scale. Unless you are doing something more valuable than going to job fair, they are not waste of time.

Thanks for reminding me why I (and most employers) prefer North American experience and education. Rest are too "Bookish." Think outside the box. Pick up some books on sales and marketing to learn how to sell because at the end of the day you are selling your qualifications and in return you want a job.

Nobody is going to pay to rent a booth at an event if they were not selling or marketing something to attendees. Anybody who has job to fill knows supply is in their favor, they don't need to pay to rent booth to fill that job.

Just figure out how to sell to the booth renter. I call it selling to a seller. FYI, one guy, I know, got a job through someone whom he met at the local job fair.

Hi AnilKG,

Don't trust on us. OK

Please visit personally next National Job Fair and then put your view.

IBM's representatives were in ACCESS's job fair and i was there from starting to end but they did not meet anybody, just sat with Access's manegement team in conference room and enjoy their lunch and on IBM's counter, one lady (she was from ACCESS) was just collecting resumes.

Job fair is nothing but just cheating with job seeking person.

Anil,

Congrats to the guy who got a job through Job Fair.. I guess there r some hidden jobs even there.

Anyways.. to all those who want to attend the National JobFare or whatever .. good luck..

I did meet one guy at the JobFair which i attended and he offered me to work for a company which sells Mutual Funds and works on the Pyramid scheme.

Good Luck!

PS: I did manage to sell my skills to the right place and I am currently doing not so bad.
