Are you concerned that you are not eligible for many federal government jobs because you dont know French? Are you concerned that your Canadian born and educated children will never know enough French to qualify for high paying Federal government jobs.
You should be. Few (less than 17% outside Quebec) Canadians know enough French and Canada is not in any way bilingual. The government of Canada continues to tighten the fluency levels for bilingual jobs, and new restrictions on training are in place. A disproportionate share of high paying government jobs are now being staffed by Francophones, because Anglophones and Allophones (those whose first language is neither English nor French) simply dont qualify, or cant learn French well enough. It is easier for Francophones to acquire English, since North America is a sea of English. More than 60% of the federal jobs in Ottawa now require French. This means Torontonians and GTA residents never have a chance to participate in the federal public service, and there is a linguistic divide between Ottawa and the rest of Canada. Many Ottawa departments won't even recruit in the GTA because they know there are no bilingual candidates here. The city of Ottawa just declared itself to be bilingual, further reducing any persons chances of finding employment in that region, if you ever need it in the future. The government also places bilingual requirements on contractors or suppliers that do business with it.
It is noted that Allophones and the Desi community are particularly effected as there are today very few entering the higher ranks of the federal government, where French fluency is very strict.
Do you think that this system is fair? Some of you will know that the Ontario government & taxpayers are paying for French schools across Ontario. These are schools only for the elite group of Francophones and only Francophone children whose parents were educated in French may attend. This is not the same as French immersion in English public schools. The Francophone Public and Catholic school enjoy smaller classroom sizes and full French fluency, while most Desi children are shut out. Is this the kind of Canada we want, where children are taught from the beginning that certain French children study separately from them? How will Canada ever become a bilingual nation? It is noted that this duplication of school systems and infrastructure is a waste of Ontarios tax dollars, and is happening as our schools are very much in need of funds.
Please dont ignore this message, because one day you or someone dear to you may want a government job, only to be rejected because of French. The Desi community has just sent a very large number of Desi politicians to represent us in Ottawa. Call or write to your MP about this very unfair situation. If we speak up, we can make a difference.
I am trying to learn french on my own. I find that "adult schools" are quite useless when it comes to learning French. Once you have acquired basic skills in French, you can register for "French as a second language" @ the University of Ottawa (for all ya Ottawa residents). This is part and parcel of your graduate studies. It does not affect your grades in any way.
You can show that certificate when you wish to apply for Govt. Jobs.

il sera dur pour apprendre le français sur vos propres. le vrai défi vient quand vous prononcez les mots. rappelez-vous, Français est parlé la manière française et pas la manière anglaise.
