Immigrants with professional qualifications need not be discouraged. Yes, there have been a few cases of people who have succeeded in getting jobs in their own fields but for most people, unless one gets a Canadian designation it is difficult. I am quite enjoying studying for the CGA because the topics covered are much more contemprary than what we study in India. I would suggest that any foreign qualified accountant take up any job when he/she comes, enroll for a Canadian accounting designation and keep looking out for a job in his/her field.

To find a good job in canada or the job of your career, all u need is vasta or some god fathers in the companies..! Trust me.. having huge degree's and studying will be not be a much help ....!!
it was really enlightening to know the facts about accounting profession.
can anybody guide me about enrolling for CGA course.presently i am working in nigeria & by dec-04 i am planning to migrate to canada.
is it possible to enroll online & get the books & syllabus here.
thanks in advance.
Well, In my opinion although local degree/qualification is must to land a job in one's own field but it is not always true. I personally know some persons who are CA from back armed with CPA na d CGA still hanging around for a good job or some even for an accounting job. On the contrary some B.Com from India who neven been in accouting getting 50-60K.
All depends on how opprtunity comes on your way and you grab it. However, previous working experience with big 4 makes a lot of difference.

Hi Friends
I am also company secy from india and i have also completed ICSA london also, presently i am working with a telecom/ cellular company in india and is having post quali exp. of more than 12 yrs.
i have twice visited canada in recent past and many of my c.s. friends r there....all r of the opinion that C.S. is a dead degree at canada....even with ICSA degree i went to the C.S. chapter office of Canada at toronto...they were also the same opinion and asked me either to aquire some finance or Accounts degree. it is really pity that they dont recognise any degree or experience other than canadian.
in short C.S. degree has no value...u have to do either CPA or CGA to settle there

There is quite a bit of Demand now a days for CA's, thanks to Sarbanes Oxley. If you have a knack for internal control assessment and documentation (basically the boring stuff), you can expect something in the region of 40 - 60K. I dont know how long the bubble will last, but for sure, atleast till the end of the year.
Lots of jobs in the US as well, both in Industry and in public accounting.
Doing CPA helps, but is not a prerequisite. But it helps, as you can get the local CA easily.
Try hotjobs or Monster, with keyword Sarbanes Oxley, or go online to the Big 5 sites. I posted my resume a year and a half ago, and got a call last month.
