My 72 years old mother will be completing her 10 years in Canada soon. She is a PR card holder. Would I need to contact CIC to apply for Pension or the papers are automatically send to us when it is time?
Please advise! thanks in advance.

Generally the OAS and CPP starts when an applicant reaches the age of 65. By then they would have lived and worked in Canada for a long period of time.

For those who entered as Seniors and Dependents at a later age to qualify, they must have a minimum of 10 years stay here with in and they will get a quarter of the total OAS at that time. You will have to assess the CPP by yourself and it is applicable to them only if they worked here in Canada for those TEN years. If they did, then, they will also get a CPP at that time.

If they are living separately, then, they will also become eligible for the supplements too. Talk to a social worker OR with an agent in the city hall who takes care of the Seniors Services. You will have to do all of this by yourself. Drop in and visit the City Hall there close by.

Good Luck.

She will have to apply for OAS with Service Canada. They won't automatically give it to her. Without application you will get NOTHING.

Every subsequent year, if she files her IT return, CRA will automatically send her income to Service Canada, to make sure she is still eligible for GIS or not.

OAS she will keep on getting automatically, but for GIS they need income eligibility each year from CRA, as GIS is only for low income seniors.

OAS is a paltry amount for someone who has just spent 10 years in Canada. So make sure she also gets GIS - Guaranteed Income Supplement , along with her OAS.

OAS + GIS = Decent Amount, otherwise just OAS is a JOKE !

Her OAS will be only around $ 125, as she has only spent 10 yrs in Canada. But her GIS could be around $ 900.

So OAS + GIS , she can get about $ 1,000 from the Canadian gov.

If she has worked in Canada expect some CPP - Canada Pension Plan.

Contact Service Canada . They had started some automatic enrollment program and automatic mailing of forms.

Not sure if that's eligible for landed immigrants or not. As you still have to reside here for at least 10 years and complete age 65. So not sure if they automatically check your year of landing and automatically mail you the forms or not.

Maybe only native people, automatically get enrolled in OAS and/or receive OAS application packages when they turn 65 .

But landed immigrants might not get them , as they still have to verify their year of landing and if they have completed 10 years in Canada or not. So maybe these guys have to be more pro active and apply on their own, instead of AUTOMATIC stuff from Service Canada.

Huge backlash against immigrant parents exist from White racist Canadians, when the immigrant's parent's collect OAS and GIS.

While racist White people and their parents who are already well off , and don't need OAS, still collect OAS shamelessly.

But a poor desi immigrant's parent, who tries to collect OAS and GIS, for survival receives scorn and gets looked down upon by White Canadians. They think they don't deserve the OAS and have done nothing for Canada, and collecting handouts from the Government.

Make sure your mom exercises her rights and takes both the OAS and GIS, which she is entitled to.

Call SERVICE Canada or even visit an office personally. They have plenty of locations everywhere.

They will tell you if its automatic or not. And what forms you have to fill up.

Send everything by registered post and keep a copy with you for your record.
