Hi,
I am a Canadian PR and planning to visit India for couple of weeks
I have question regarding Indian custom duty exemption limit
I will be Visiting India after 20 months and planning to carry my Camcorder which I bought while staying in USA more than two years back.?I will be taking my purchase receipt with me which will clearly show that this stuff I have been using for more than two years.Do I still not pay any duty ?What is the current duty exemption limit (per person)for a NRI who has been stsyong outside for more than 3 years and visting India after more than a year and half
Will appreciate any kind of help/info
Thanks

I think cam corders are exempt from duty just like lap tops .

However , in practice customs guys are cheats @ the Airport .They have a whole nexus there and try 2 extort as much as they can $20 , $50 whatever .........
Recommeneded : carry a printout of the Customs Regulation alongwith and DO NOT get under pressure . Gen its the Junior Staff which swindles .

Regarding ani70's concern about taking a camcoder.
Actually now-a-days camcoders are so common in India that the customs guys in India don't bother anymore.
That appart the rule is that - if the item is that if the item is for personal use then it is exempt from duties be it camcoder or Laptops etc. Your return ticket will prove that your stay in India is short term. Also they might make a note of it in the passport and check it when you are returning. Also they have NO business to look at the reciept.
My brother has actually carried a camcoder and sucessfully got it back, 4 years back !! hence I'am advising you.
He was carrying a laptop they didn't bother to look at it.
Hope that answer's your concern.
Enjoy your trip - And do rember to buy a converting plug in India, it cost's 5 bucks.
