I am looking to buy a used car , I found that used car dealers are dishonest and ripoff !
So I want to buy car privately, I want to know what steps I should take , I live in Toronto
Lets see if i buy a car from different city say Ottawa/Kingston, how is the sale process
Seller has to transfer ownership at nearest service ontario & i pay cash ,
How can i drive this car to Toronto ? , will i need insurance and new licence plates before bringing car to toronto
What will be smooth way to do all this ?
thanks
Browse for ' Busying Selling Car Ontario' and you will get all the information or better read it carefully here
http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/used.shtml
https://www.ontario.ca/page/buy-or-sell-used-vehicle-ontario
You must be aware of the buying selling process fully yourself as you would have no one to blame later so please go through the above links thoroughly.
However the basic summary is as follows .
a. Check out the UVIP which shows important information about the car and the seller is obligated to show it to the user . if the seller is hesitant , get the VIN from him and you can get it from Service Ontario for $20/-. Do not cut a deal w/o checking this out first.
b. The Seller needs to give you the vehicle portion of the permit endorsed behind with his sign affirming acceptance to sell the car . Plus it is better to have a bill of sale .. The last page of the UVIP can be used for this purpose.
c. You must have the following before you can transfer the ownership to yourself.
> UVIP and Vehicle permit as per a and b above
> Your own driving licence
> Proof of Insurance - they can email you a copy in 15 minutes
>Safety Certificate and Emissions Test Certificate.
You have 6 days to transfer vehicle in your name. Upon satisfying the above , you can get new plates or transfer your own plates to the vehicle.
If for some reason you buy the car as is , or you don't have safety / emission / plates , you can get temporary 10 day plate from Service Ontario for $25/- but you still need the Insurance Proof.
Smooth way is to buy the car safety and emission tested by the seller prior to sale and take all the docs to the Service Ontario (Sat only till 1 pm) and do the transfer on the spot and get new plates .
Hope this helps.
Go to Driving sub forum of the charcha and you will find more related threads on this topic detailing also what to look out for when buying a used vehicle.
