Hi there,
Do we need to pay any import duty on a 25 kg gift package coming through a Courier Service from overseas, ie India or Pakistan. If so, how much is the duty approximately and which Courier Service charges the least.
Thanks
It is not the weight alone, but its value and there are other factors, such as the categories that it falls under also merits the rate. Not to mention the GST and HST Rates on the value.
The first $60.00 value of the item, they waive now. Please see the link below. Also the courier first pays your duty and then collects it from you, so there is a service charge gets tacked on to it. If you have a running account with a courier, such as Fed Ex, then they will give you a break, when you get this parcel sent through them.
Any courier through whom you can track a parcel is a good courier. Also, if you belong to a group, such as Teachers, Professional people's group they already have an arrangement made for a lower rate and other discounts from all of the Major Couriers.
Contact and get all of the details from them prior to sending the parcel, from where ever it is coming to you.
FH.

Thanks FH for the info. Any idea if Canada Post can be used to import small parcels / packages. I have heard someone saying that Canada Post regular mails are fairly economical and can be used for such purposes. Please suggest.
You can use the postal services of the country it is originating from (India, Pakistan, etc.). Remember to buy tracking number for sure and insurance if you want. Canada Post will charge $9.95 plus HST on the value of goods at a minimum. There may be additional duties depending on the item you are importing.

Dear raj, can you elaborate on it. Is it about importing some item from overseas, and whether it is a flat rate ! Thanks
If you import $1000 worth of goods, you will pay $130 plus Canada Post handling fee of 9.95. There can be duties as well depending on nature of goods imported. You should explore CBSA site to find out if there will be any duties or not http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/postal-postale/duty-droits-eng.html
