Those days are gone. Engineers have become a laughing stock in India(especially, in the south).

In India, fresh mechanical engineering graduates are repairing tractors in rural areas. Some unemployed engineering graduates have turned to mugging(chain snatching). Engineering as a profession has lost respect, unless one is from the IITs,IISc, RECs, govt colleges(main campuses) etc....

I see no point in taking, for example, a degree in Industrial Engineering and then aspiring for an MBA-kinda job. If you intend to use degrees as a foot-through-the-door for employment, then there are other areas of study as well.

Trades are respected in Canada. A true engineer must have hands-on knowledge, and these colleges can bridge the gap. In any professional endeavour, most respected people are those who have come through the trenches, not some slick MBA types or wet-behind-the-ears university graduates. This will be truer in the near future.

A more robust route for aspiring engineers would be--- (1) Trades school, (2) Job (3) University for higher skills(read, keeping up with the Jonses).

University can be self-financed, after acquiring a job, post college-diploma. A joint program, that includes senior secondary as well as the trades, would be a good route for aspiring engineers and shave-off some time in achieving your goals.

Desis, please note. There is a tectonic shift occurring in education, and what was good back in your day may not work today.

Yes Engineers in India do MBA and then go into Finance and banking type of jobs .

Even Civil engineers, Mechanical engineers will try to change their line to IT and try to become software engineers even though their degree is not Computer engineering.

Elmer,
I was not talking about India. I am taking about the West (Canada, USA, Germany and the like). Still Engineering is a very job giveable profession in the west.

Donot think cheaply of Engineering courses in India esp. south.
Many private universities advertize that they got 3700 placements in one day (TCS, Infy, Cognizent). Examples are Sathyabama, VIT university etc.. Salary may be like 25K a month to start with which is not bad.

In 1990's, TCS, Cognizant, Infy were famous companies that came to REC's to recruit (NIT now). So I was think of what those people prefer. The NIT people now a days never give any campus interview to TCS, Infy, Cognizant, Wipro and all. They call them inferior.

Now NIT students only apply to Google, FB, Mindtree etc.. which are top top software companies paying lots.

There are mom and pop universities in South India too which just give degree and students work in BPO and all.

Go with the tide or be lost.
