WASHINGTON: Cuba has become the first country in the world to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis, the World Health Organisation has said.
"Eliminating transmission of a virus is one of the greatest public health achievements possible," WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said yesterday.

I think this is a major breakthrough in the medical field. Notable part is that this has come from a state that was demonized by the rich, the Cubans did not drop the ball and continued research on many fronts during their years of oppression by the international society aka cartel.
Kudos to Cuba, this is an achievement.

Read something similar about Cuba a few weeks back, that their progress in medicine that fights HIV and even Cancer is very significant. With the US rebooting diplomatic relations with Cuba, this will hopefully mean some of their advances come into the mainstream.

Are you there?
While Michael Moore's portrayal of a subject is often skewed, there are facts too. Sicko gave some decent picture of cuban healthcare and development, let us here more.
Hope the pharama barrons don't contain the development.

This is a good example for India to emulate. Graduate lots of doctors, but maintain high standards. They have third world equipment----ok, slightly better than third world---but first class service. They focus on basics as well(like nutrition, infant-mortality, fitness etc.). Unfortunately, these services are abused by citizens.
Their infant mortality rate is second in the Americas(North and South), only after Canada. Their emergency services are out of this world. Emergency rooms are sectioned based on specialisation area! So separate emergency rooms for gynecology, cardiology, nephrology etc.
