Dear Captain.Nathan Cirillo !.
I would like to salute you on behalf of my fellow Ignorant Desi's salute you for service to Canada!.
We salute you for your bravery, standing up for freedom which represents Canada !.
We are known as the Global Peacekeepers and also the refuge for the poor, needy and punished all over the world. This is proven by the Tamils from Srilanka, Ukrainians, the Christian minority persecuted by ISIS in Iraq and the list goes on and on.
We are sad but overjoyed to see thousands of our fellow countrymen and women line up the highway of heroes to wave the Canadian flag and sing O! Canada when your hearse drove that way.
I'm sorry and apologize to you that we could not spot any Desi's in the crowd thanking you and saluting you!. We are always like this as even when our Indian parliament was attacked nobody thanked the heroes who defended the parliament and laid down the life in defense of our democracy!. Incidentally many are defending the perpetrators in court and want presidential pardon(Afzal Guru !).
May be my fellow Desi's were eating Diwali sweets, bursting crackers and watching Happy New Year at Woodbridge Cinema !, when rest of Canada was saluting you!.
May be it is NOT a big deal for my fellow Desi's as they value your Dollars, democracy, freedom of speech and multi-cultural ism but when it comes to defense of democracy it will be some ones job.
The day you were murdered at the very place freedom was celebrated is day when Canada has changs forever!.

Sunny Leone a true Canadian DESI now back in India !.
VM,
We can understand the pain in your heart.
Even in India we are like that, not a few, but majority of us. Therefore, when the same products get exported to another country, do not expect them to be different.
In India if you speak about this to somebody, most likely he would look at you as if you are an alien from a different planet.
The most common and simple example from here, is that of people riding their two wheeler on the wrong side during peak hours on an already congested road. Not only he would be careless, he would be putting his mobile phone between his shoulder and one ear and talking as if nothing else exists.
Not a question of an ordinary traffic violation inviting a simple fine as punishment.
But the attitude towards his fellow countrymen or other road users.
If we go back in history, we would have been like this even from the days of Mohd Ghori or Ghazni. We had left the burden of defending the entire sub-continent on one Prithiviraj Chauhan. Other maharajas might have been spending their time in harems, but would have given excuse as "vayithu vali or paatiku divasam" for not turning up on the battlefield.
We had happily outsourced the job of governance to the Mughals and then to the British, and when they too became intolerable, outsourced the job of getting Freedom to one NRI returnee by name M. K. Gandhi. When he became nuisance we shot him point blank. But in case people find out and call us out who we are, we made a big noise about how big a Mahtama he was, put up statues in nook and corner of the country, have an MG Road in every city and declare Oct 2 as holiday.
My mother would have never wanted me to be called a Mahatma, nor shot dead.
After all this only, we are riding our two wheeler the manner mentioned above. Not an easy task.

As much I am against pomp and show (and disturbances) of festivals, I think there has to be room for each event in the open community such as Canada.
Full respect for the soldier who laid his life for Country but relating it with Diwali is uncalled for. There are mishaps (and valor) occurring everyday, Enforcing it on kids & families will not be justifiable, specially for the event which is awaited throughout the year and lot of emotional investment made into it by the south Asians (specially by certain business houses :-)) plus there is religious significance to which people are mad about ( I am restricting to my negative comments about religion here for a change) .
Christmas will also be not be put on back burner for no tragedy. ( thats why !)
There was official statement placed by Jason Kenny on Diwali. So be happy people your celebration were recognised, officially.

Minister Kenney issues statement on Diwali
Ottawa, October 23, 2014 – The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister for Multiculturalism, issued the following statement to recognize Diwali:
“Today Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists in Canada and around the world are celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Lights. As one of the most important days of the year for South Asians, many will gather with their friends and family to spend time in prayer, light diyas (lamps), watch firework displays, and exchange gifts and sweets.
"
Personally , I did not celebrate , Reason is different.
Condolences and strength to Capt Cirillo's family from my side.
