A friend of mine is debating on moving to Sask or Manitoba for the following reasons:
-Better savings (since the cost of living is expected to be lower)
-Better prospects for kids. His kids are in high school and according to him, the competition is tough in ontario to get into good programs. He believes that his kids have better chances to getting into programs such as medicine in Sask/Manitoba since the competition is expected to be lighter.
-He doesnt care about being closer to "desi" crowd.

Any thoughts on the second point from the experienced folks?

Thanks
T

I will provide you here with a link to the STATCAN website and I would urge your friend to delve a little deeper and make notes on each subjrct matter. Then see if it is worth moving to any other province of their choice. That will be a well researched move and might be very rewarding one at that.

http://www.statcan.gc.ca/tables-tableaux/sum-som/l01/cst01/cpis01a-eng.htm
This will provide you with the costs and the CPI at each Province. May not provide a particular city. If they know how to tabulate in a spread sheet, then they will get to know better at each of the locations, prior to making a valued decision.

Let me provide you with a concrete example.. Say, if a Student is getting into SEVEN Years of medicine. The cost would run into $140,000. An year of Internship or as an understudy, subsequently, it will take a minimum of 10-12 years to pay back. They will have a great start.
Yes, the chances of getting a seat may be better in some other province. That needs to be verified. Also they can see if they can get that entry from here, where ever they are currently living. (It does not matter where?)

Alternately, obtain a Masters in Pharmacology, after Six years you have an opening anywhere here. Four years down the road, you can own a Brand Name Pharmacy Store. Ten years down the road, you can spend SIX months on the beach.

A Doctor has his own set of patients and a secretary to help him with and cannot find a replacement, unless s/he is in a group practice. Needs to be weighed.

Also, I know people who own a COFFEE place, (No Names here) who are millionaires, keep purchasing a next one every FOUR years. So, I am unable to make a call here.

Do consider all of the weather conditions that the other provinces are in and the great infrastructures that we have here in Ontario.

TO EACH HIS OWN..

Pass it on to them please,

FH.

I have passed through the TWO PROVINCES you have mentioned here. Manitoba has a slighly bigger population. Sasketchewan has about a million +.

Timon,
What about his job?
With lower living expenses, he is expected to get less in his job + hassle of finding a job, esp. in areas like that.
Again, isn't university competetion at an all Canada level? Is it based only on Onatario univ's for Ontarians? So if I relocate to Yellowknife and live on welfare will my kids be free to choose the best of the courses that are offered in those universities?
