Dear Sudesingh,

Thanks for the reply, but not clear. Lets say I am inside Canada, would then there be any way I could get these paid taxes HST / GST back. Please explain what you mean by limit is 67$ ? Thanks

OK..one last try...

Since you are outside the country AND you have residential ties with the country, you CANNOT apply for any of following benefits, even if you meet income & other conditions required to receive the benefit:

GST, CTB, WITB or Trillium benefit

Once you enter the country, you shall qualify TO APPLY for the benefit/s. Depending on income, you may / may not qualify to get the benefit. Applying and receiving are 2 different things.

Hope that helps and clarifies.

In short, since you're not in the country, stay put and just file your return and DO NOT apply for any of the benefits. Yes, 'cause you meet the residency conditions, you should file your return.

As regards the $67 - it is the maximum amount of GST credit each individual receives each quarter. The exact amount depends on your family income. Similarly, CTB, WITB and Trillium benefits have a max. amount that you receive, and it too depends on your family income in a given year.

So for e.g. based on your family income you may be eligible to receive $67 (max) per individual, per quarter for 4 quarters (1 year). After that when you file your tax for the next year, the exact amount will be determined for the next 4 quarters. Makes sense ? Same goes for the other benefits too.

The $67 has nothing to do with how much HST you paid when you bought stuff during the year. It's linked to your annual income.

Dear Sudesingh, thanks for nice explanation. Now in my case, if I go to Canada and submit my tax returns..will have to show zero income. Thus I will become eligible to get the child care benefit, right. Question is..are there any chances that I might also start getting other benefits as well as mentioned above. Thanks

Hasni:
You need not show Zero income (Though you donot need to provide any proof of it in the first year of filing tax).
There will be no change in the benefis that you will get if your income for the previous years was between $ 0 and $ 12000 (or so). And if your income declared / earnt was between $ 12,000 and 52,000 $ per year, then the benefits will get gradually reduced (as per formula), giving you nothing if your income is above $ 52,000 a year (family income). If you income is above $ 52,000 a year, you will get Zero GST benefits and possibly very low CCTB. However UCCB (for children below year 5 or 6) of $ 100 per month / child will still be credited to you, irrespective of your income.
However, you are couting pennies instead of trying to count $.

Peace by Murali
