Hi Guys,

I am IT professional and working with the same private company from last 7 years. I don't see much growth here but it is very convenient for transportation and flexibility. 10 min. drive from home.

I have got an opportunity in Govt for 18 months term position. Almost, I have accepted an offer. Not much difference in Salary. Govt has offered little more than current salary. So, there is no problem of salary. I have to travel in Bus and will take 1.5 hours one way. I have prepared myself for it and ready to joining government. I will lose my free time in evening where I was helping my wife and taking kids for activities.

I am doing all these because of Government Job. To put the feet in government Job and try to be permanent with same or different position in Govt.

Please not that I am in Ottawa.

Do you think it is easy to get permanent position in Govt?
What are the chances of keep extending term position in Govt?
What are the chances to get another position if current position will not extend? (I heard it will be easy to get another position if I have already worked for Govt)
Do you think it is right decision to join Govt?
What are major advantage of Govt Job in compare of Private Job?

Thanks in Advance

Dude,
your last question makes me laugh.
You have accepted the Govt.'s offer (with same salary) and now you are asking the advantage of a Govt. job over a private one.
Anyways, let me tell you what I know.
Govt. job in Canada (also depends on the dept.) is extremely easy going.

1.5 hours one way in Ottawa sound extreme. You will commute longer in the winter. 3 hours cut in your day is not a joke. If you work for 40 hours a week, you are now going to waste 15 hours extra (around 40%) on commute. Better move closer to the govt. office.

Regarding renewal, it depends on the dept., the budget etc.. but reading Redflagdeal.com, I can come to a conclusion that once you have set your foot there, you will always be there. On the other hand, the same forum discourages joining the govt., if it is the same salary as your last salary and says that your brain will become numb in Govt, services.

Govt. offers a great pension but then with your temp. job of 18 months, I am not sure if you will be eligible for that. However, should your plan be to be with the Govt. of Canada till you retire, your pension will be good.

Hope this helps.

Hi Meitsme,
I have started an IT contract with govt. recently, so will try to answer few of your questions in my point of view..

Q>Do you think it is easy to get permanent position in Govt?
ANS> Not easy to get into Full time position directly unless u have specific skill set.

Q>What are the chances of keep extending term position in Govt?
ANS> Most of the IT projects gets extended and never came across any project that has not extended in my career.

Q>What are the chances to get another position if current position will not extend? (I heard it will be easy to get another position if I have already worked for Govt)
ANS>Yes, Mostly past ministry experience is preferred for any new positions in Govt sector.

Q>Do you think it is right decision to join Govt?
ANS> It depends on the work environment, commute, pay, benefits finally whats your goal (growth or retirement)

Q>What are major advantage of Govt Job in compare of Private Job?
ANS>Layoffs are minimal (none), Pension & Benefits are better, Relax/stress free life (depends on the project and role of your job)

Regarding the actual figures of benefits/pension details can be obtained from other forum member who are currently with govt.
All the best.

NOTE: I am rethinking of continuing in govt. due to commute (3hrs) in GTA.
