Hi guys,
I am Mechanical engineering graduate from India and was doing quiet good in India working with MNC with a handsome pay package.
It has been 2 years now in canada but i have not got a single job offer from my field.
Somehow i missed reading this post earlier. I have exactly the same background as yours and i totally sympathize with your situation, as i have been thru it a number of times already. But fortunately my waiting time was never more than 2-3 months. I am a Mech engineer as well and started my career in an MNC in Bombay and have slowly moved along into related and more diversified fields.
I'd like to meet you in person and see if we can gain from each other's perspectives and experience. Please send me a pm and lets talk.!!
While there are so many experiences to share, there are two things i'd like to share with everyone which has consistently helped me and my friends come out of tough spots in career
1. Try to move out of your immidiate job profile and target as many related fields as you can. This way you increase your target companies and target job profiles.
When we meet, we can talk about how to safely do it and some of our experiences in doing it, both good and bad.
2. Enroll as a student while searching for job:
Your value is high in the job market if you are already employed, and it drops dramatically as soon as you become just a person looking for a job. Now, all new immigrants are first time job seekers , so to counter this drawback , it greatly helps if one enrols into some related course in a local college or institute , any course as long as you can say you are studying something related to your field . A "student job seeker" carries more weight as a job seeker than a "fresh immigrant job seeker" . You will not only gain new skills in the new field by enrolling but will also get better exposure into your related job market.
We can talk about more tips when we meet in person , talking of meeting , if more people want to meet and talk about job seeking then please come forward. ...lets have an informal session together and focus on job seeking techniques and gain form each other's experiences.
It will be fun!!
Look forward for your responses.
I HAD APPLIED IN APR 2000 AND AWAITING PAPERS.WOULD LIKE TWO KNOW IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO FIND A JOB, ANY JOB , EVEN OTHER THAN MY FIELD OF EXP(MECH ENGG) BEFORE LANDING IN CANADA
