Hi everyone,
To be able to have a clearer view, I'd like to inform that I'm a newly qualified Chartered Accountant from India and will be shifting to Canada on immigration basis within 2-3 months. I also understand that there is a MoU between ICAI & CICA.
I would be grateful if someone could help me get a clearer picture as to what should be my POA now or once I reach there. Also, which of these i.e. CA/CGA has better prospects and how do they differ.
Please, it's an earnest request to forward any study material whatsoever that could be helpful for me to pursue one of these i.e. CA/CGA or both.
My email id is
Thanks in advance & please do throw some light if you are aware as I'm quite new to all of this.
RE CA vs. CGA
CA has upper hand as compared to CGA and CMA at least in terms of job prospect and compensation. Some of the province has merged all 3 accounting designation in to one called Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) http://cpacanada.ca/.
Post MOU it is advisable to go for CA instead of CGA. You will be able to finish CA within 1 year with least cost as compared to CGA or CMA
POA now:
-Visit job portals (Workopolis http://www.workopolis.com/EN/Common/HomePage.aspx , Linked In https://www.linkedin.com/home , Big Five Banks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Five_%28banks%29 and recruiter’s website) for jobs matching your skills set and experience. You will get better idea.
-Next CA exam is in September 2013. Visit provincial website for registration process.
-Obtain letter of good standing from ICAI
-Obtain transcript from CA and university for CGA
-Visit ICAI Members in Canada (sub-group of ICAI Largest CA Group) group on Linked In
-Visit Ajay’s blog Canada calling http://ajaywidge59.blogspot.ca/ it has useful information as well.
-Complete US CPA before landing. So that you can get the advance status in CA.
-Search Crenshaw, nightmare and Chandresh on Canadian Desi website. They are all Indian CAs and have extensively expressed their view in charcha. Look for discussion relevant to Indian CA.
-Download member directory from annual magazine published on Toronto Chapter’s website http://www.icaitoronto.com/
POA on arrival:
-Based on above you might be in a better position to decide
RE Study material:
-This is not at all relevant at this pint in time. First decide what you want to do and than look for study material. If you need to, than just concentrate on soft skills.
Hope this helps
Thanks a lot for all the help, seenimesh.
I, basically am planning to do a CA itself from Canada as having completed my CA from India, I'd be able to finish it off earlier and it is quite on the lines of what ive studied in here already. But i had also heard that a lot of CAs from here do a CGA instead so couldn't quite c a difference in both of the courses except for a few off course.
I also have another request i.e. although i searched the sites of both CA and CGA, I could not get across their prospectuses. This, i require because ICAI demands a prospectus for issuing the transcripts. So, if feasible, could u please send me a link of their prospectus i.e. CICA n CGA cz i fail to find them. And i shall now go through all the links that you've sent already so that i can get a better understanding of the program.
Thanks a ton.
Regards.
And also, i shall reach canada in a month's time, looking at the current state of file. So CPA doesnt seem possible. I wish I had posted this query earlier, could've planned it accordingly. Anyway, thanks for all the help.
