How is the electronic scene at the offices (IT and Non-IT) in Canada now?
When I was last employed in Canada in Jan 2011, Office people hardly used Blackberry (wifi) and Ipad has just come.

In my office in late 2010 no one had used Ipad, Blackberry / apple Wifi etc..
In Early 2009, my previous office had provided blackberry phone (without Wifi) to senior employees in Canada

In India what I see these days (From Mid 2010) is this :

Every one has blackberry/Apple Wifi enabled. They are on BB SMS and constantly ping each other.

At office though internet connection (LAN) is given, some people use Wifi USB stick (at office expense) and surf

While on Train/Flight travel , My VP’s (Indians with overseas exposure and some American Desi’s) bring their Ipad. They have the USB which they attach in either the Ipad or some other device , switch it on and then surf the web on Ipad. They access my office inboz, check mails and reply to e-mails. They are able to open PDF drawings and comment on it and send it back.

This is the reason that I too want to get some tablet and show off.

Buy a SLATE from India. It works even in a flight. You need a chaulk to write and hand to erase. I did not expect this type of question from such an experienced person who have traveled all over the world and still know where he can get cheapest food in Canada and has inputs for every question (legal or illegal).

Answer is if you have a use then buy it. Owning an Ipad is not that cheap as you would need to buy apps which are not free.

Everyone's office is different in Canada, I get every communication / entertainment service I use at a discounted rate from my employer for my home use too.. some others get everything free of cost too.. and some don't.
I lose my job, I lose the freebies. I may get something better than this or worse.

if you just want to show off to people here in Canada that you live in a better environment, we've heard that many times from you.. Don't go through this constant battle.. give it up.. every place is better than other in some aspect.

Otherwise, I found ipad pretty helpful for many reasons (I have a BB playbook though and not well into it).

1. Ability of the battery to hold power longer (laptop - 3+ hours).
2. User friendly applications.
3. Entertainment.
4. Hook up to your business email where wifi, 3G available.
5. Easy to carry along with your papers in a simple bag.
6. Multiple add-ons available in the market.

Looks like many applications would be ipad friendly in future.

These devices have their risk, unless or otherwise they are taken serious, they may land people workaholic, expose their personal life due to social apps, video camera etc.., tend to compromise the balance...

All of us got either black berry or iphone from work with enough min/MB for personal use. Its quite helpful for emails mostly an hour before and after work. Office Wifi is open for everyone. Except facebook everything is available. Ppl read news papers for few min after lunch. Other than that, I didn't see much browsing. Dress code is casual. Jeans and shorts are common. Work deliveries are quite professional. I didn't see ppl doing personal phone calls and marathon browsing. we don't have any college graduate here not much texting. We got the freedom but we don't abuse it. My boss never peek into my laptop or note my in-out hours. I love the professionalism here.

I don't like the idea of personal iPad at work. iPad is counter productive and distracts us. Its quite different from warehouse workers listening to radio. Our guys show off either by parking lot (lexus, bmw.. ) or thru international vacations twice a year. iPad during travel is common. Not in Office.
