barring one wrestler (Arjan Bhullar) , no other desi in Canadian olympic squad of 300 ! ? !
Seems like sports is a cultural thing than anything else. Even 3rd or 4th generations of desis are not coming forward to do sports.
Another thing baffles me is very less chinese component in Canadian team otherwise China is topping in the medal tally?
I wonder what conclusions we should draw out of this...
I made the same observation while watching Canadian team march into the stadium - it was very "white". Desis or orientals apart, why can't we have another Donovan Bailey or Ben Johnson
Seems like it will take couple of generations before we realise that being doctor or engineer is not the only goal in life (not that there is anything wrong in pursuing those careers if you have the aptitude)
Why no Cdn. desi? India has a population of 1.2 billion, that is 1/6th of the world's human beings. Look at the medal count today and historically, it is beyond dismal. Olympic prep. requires a lifetime of dedication with a very high probability that you won't make it. I don't know any desi families with the drive for those kind of odds.
Why very few Cdn. Chinese?
Cause you can't do this to kids in Canada, you'd get arrested.

Are you there?
Because desis are too much obsessed with Bollywood and Cricket they don't have time to think about other sports and activities.
Well, we used to have arguments such as 'lack of infrastructure', 'no funds or sponsors', 'lack of govt. focus or will' in India as the causes of dismal sports achievements at international level.
But Indians abroad, if not 1st or 2nd gen, but atleast those who are born in US/Canada/UK will not have those excuses !! They may not be interested in bollywood or cricket as well ! what are all these kids upto ?
I went further to analyse the desi component of UK and US. out of 540 / 560 athletes there is one familier name in UK and there is no ABCD on the list of current olmpic team for these countries.
May be its our genes then !
Blame the parents. They are still stuck in the past. They want thier kids only to be doctors and lawyers (engineer thing has faded). They have to earn lot of money so that hte parents can boast with others. The mindset wont change.
Canada has lot of opportunities for sports with good facilities for practice with less politics in selection as compared to India. Still where is Canada in the medals table? Near USA or UK?
