All reforms need not be for the better, from whatever experience we have gained from the new age private sector banks, private telephone cos or the courier cos., which were supposed to give better service compared to public sector banks, BSNL or our dear old post man of the P&T, respectively.
There is neither good service which they were supposed to give nor the good relationships which we enjoyed with the latter.
Even in the mid 90s, common man like myself (who certainly do not belong to the privileged few) could get BSNL connection for the asking. Since you had left our shores for good since that period, you may not know what is happening in India. It was not because of liberalization, but the outbreak of fibre optics technology and then mobile telephony.
The private operators were the ones who greased the palms of the ministers and bureaucrats to make the people serving PSUs into loss making entities and ultimately shut them down. This is/will be true at least in the case of BSNL. The private operators when they were having monopoly of the mobile telephony were charging something like Rs.30 for the "incoming call" ! The entry of BSNL into mobile during BJP made things easier for the common man. The unscrupulous among the corporate were also equally responsible for the 2G, which made the country lose 1.72 lac crores as per our CAG.
Similarly, we have P&T. Many of our post offices have been shut down and merged into one building. The ordinary post card and inland letters which were very helpful for the common man, cannot be had easily. The post men have also become fewer in numbers. They were having very good knowledge about the locality in which they were operating and was a valuable source of information for everyone including the police.
Finally, about the new age private sector banks less said the better. Like in the earlier two cases, it is these new private entities who consider service not to "all Indians across the board" but only to the "privileged few" profitable and operate on that principle. Their service is expensive, horrible or both.
