I have seen a sign saying 'Stop the mega-quarry' on the lawn of a church near my workplace in the Forest Hill area of Toronto for a few weeks. I didn't pay much attention because some people are just against mining altogether as it cannot possibly have no environmental impact. However, I've finally looked into this issue and it seems particularly alarming. A large American corporation has purchased thousands of acres of prime farmland in Ontario and plans to build a mega-quarry deeper than Niagara falls. This land will never be farmable again.
I think environmental health affects all Canadians and suggest that you take the time to read a little bit about this issue. I can't find coverage of the story in the Globe and Mail but it was covered by the Toronto Star and the CBC.
I would like to add that I am aware Canadian mining corporations are causing destruction arond the world (years ago I learned that Alcan the aluminum company displaced many Indians from their homes without proper compensation and ever since I have purchased more expensive tinfoil made ethically from recycled aluminum). My anger is not that an American company is threatening our environment but that our farmland and drinking water are being threatened period. It would not be okay if the quarry were to be Canadian owned.
